I'm Po Yan Chan, a filmmaker and anthropologist-in-training based in Manchester. Since 2018 I have directed, shot and edited short documentaries, collaborating with diverse communities and on independent projects that explore social issues and culture. My work includes on-going projects about disease and the integration of Hong Kong immigrants, developed with local groups and participants through careful observation and dialogue. I aim to build relaxed, collaborative on-set environments that allow participants to express themselves freely. I continually develop my craft in editing (with Adobe Premiere Pro and Canva) and shot composition, and I look forward to opportunities that blend documentary storytelling with anthropological insight.

Co-developed and edited multiple short films with a Mancunian-based community group and University of Manchester peers. Roles included editor, boom operator and assistant director, with on-set coordination and on-the-spot problem solving. Built rapport with participants through effective communication and observation, creating a relaxed on-set atmosphere that encouraged authentic performances. Ongoing projects include a short film addressing disease surveillance and a creative piece on the integration of Hong Kong immigrants with Salford locals. I co-edited these works with directors to synchronize camera, sound and performance, and to support progressive on-set workflows.
