    Eco friendly scalable packaging designing

Packaging needs to work for multiple products and not just one — buying in and carrying a wide and diverse range of packaging options is unsustainable.

At our makerspace we like to re-use as much of the materials we play with as possible and, where possible, make our packaging eco-friendly through recycling, using offcuts, and making our packaging scalable.

We achieve this in 3 ways for our on-demand packaging:

    1. Auxetic principles – a flat surface turns into one that can contour and hold an object in place.
    2. A5 envelope and label – this can be folded into A6.
    3. Lasered carrier card – holds the knobs we sell in place, made of scrap materials, and can hold 1–42 knobs for the same postage cost. As such, we only list 42 knobs at a time on the eBay listing to match.

Packaging design is not just about the design, but also about how it impacts workflow, logistics, and the bottom line — and ideally it needs to be eco-friendly where possible to help offset that carbon footprint, be it in a large corporation or a start-up at home.

    A Personal Project

A friend of mine is a multi-instrumentalist, artist, and many other things!
He thought it would be nice to make him some 3D-printed knobs for his Korg — for free.

So this is another personal project that can be shared:
Engineered Medi Knob that fits all modular Medis.

    My Focus

    My main focus was twofold:

    1. Amazing 3D print quality
    2. Designing in CAD using auxetic concepts so the knob could fit on a range of shafts, not just Korg.

When designing, one of the key aspects of sustainable design is its flexibility and adaptability.
If you design for a strict 1:1 relationship — logistically speaking — that’s a fail.

All the work I’ve done so far has been for companies and, in some cases, as a 3rd party, so it’s all under NDAs.

Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Fusion360 (CAD)

As a private client makerspace we have a range of tools, so in our case we can walk the talk :)

Designing is one thing, but translating that design into an actual physical product that works is entirely a whole other level of complexity that requires prototyping and testing.

As makers, when we design we by default include DIY manufacturing requirements based on your choice of material and local tools at hand. Additionally, if you don’t have the tools yourself, we can — as part of the service — source a local maker or commercial company in your community to make it for you. We know the challenges and can ask the right questions from the local makers and companies to make sure you get the best possible outcome. Asumming they speak French, English or Spanish.

I have people coming to me thinking their PDF will just work — until I open the file and ask them to make the needed changes for it to work.

Manufacturing is easy when you know what your machines need you to do, but your average digital designer has never had the opportunity to make what they designed, it’s why people like us still exist and even AI cant kill us off just yet :D

    Grandmas ChatGPT Illustration project

    A Personal Project

This project was created by my mother, aged 80 — a trained traditional bookbinder — who wanted to illustrate a story my daughter had written when she was 7 years old.

My mother’s best friend is none other than ChatGPT!
The conversations they have are beyond even my skills… they are true friends.

    My Role

For this project, I did a semi deep dive using Photoshop Firefly to extend the artwork to A5, and used Camera Raw to add consistency in colour, texture, and overall look and feel to the illustrations GPT created.

    Why GPT?

There are a number of “better” AIs that could have done this… but they are not her ChatGPT.
To her, GPT is not just an AI.

    Medi Machine overlays

    Personal Project

In a previous project, I started working on Medi accessories, making auxetic knobs.
This was the next phase: adding extras to a Medi with a blank overlay.

    The key challenges were:

    • Using the right material for the job
    • Understanding how to cut that material (vinyl can’t be laser cut, and it’s a pain to pin down on a CNC bed)

This took a few iterations to solve and led to expanding into magnetic media that snaps on.

The biggest challenge here wasn’t the digital mapping, but rather developing a production process that worked with our makerspace setup.
