Vsion Mixer at Abs-cbn Broadcasting
November 30, 1999 - August 31, 2020The Vision Mixer is a highly skilled technical and creative role responsible for controlling the visual output of a multi-camera television program, live event, or recorded production. Working closely with the Director in the production gallery/control room, the Vision Mixer operates the vision mixing console (video switcher) to select, cut, and transition between various video sources in real-time, delivering the final visual product to the audience.
Key Responsibilities:
Live Switching/Mixing: Operate the vision mixing desk to cut, dissolve, wipe, or perform other transitions between multiple incoming video sources, including live camera feeds, pre-recorded segments (VT/playout), graphics, and digital effects.
Director Collaboration: Execute the Director's instructions precisely and instantaneously, taking the correct camera or source at the moment the Director cues it.
Visual Storytelling: Use editorial and visual judgment to make creative decisions on shot selection and transitions, especially during fast-paced or unscripted moments, to maintain a compelling visual narrative and flow.
Graphics and Effects: Integrate on-screen graphics (e.g., lower thirds, scoreboards, titles) and digital effects, ensuring they are correctly timed, positioned, and keyed over the program picture.
Technical Setup: Configure the vision mixing equipment before the broadcast, including routing, assigning, and checking all video inputs (cameras, VTs, graphics generators) for technical quality, sync, and correct formatting.
Rehearsals: Participate in rehearsals to practice complex sequences, confirm transition timings, and ensure the console is correctly prepared for the running order.
Problem Solving: React calmly and quickly to technical or on-air issues, selecting alternative sources or executing visual changes on the fly to maintain a smooth broadcast.
Communication: Maintain clear and concise communication with the Director, Camera Operators, Graphics Operators, EVS Operators, and other technical staff via a talkback system.
Quality Control: Monitor the Program (PGM) and Preview (PVW) outputs to ensure visual consistency, correct framing, and adherence to broadcast standards.
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
Proven experience operating professional vision mixing consoles/video switchers (e.g., Grass Valley & Kahuna
Exceptional hand-eye coordination and the ability to multi-task effectively under high pressure.
Strong visual awareness, understanding of shot composition, and a keen sense of timing and pacing.
Ability to remain calm, focused, and decisive in a live, fast-paced environment.
