Ruwan Hamdy (b. 1995) is an Egyptian architect, interdisciplinary artist, and practice-based researcher based in Alexandria. Working at the intersection of architecture, art, and design, her practice spans image-making, text, spatial interventions, and participatory or performative workshops. Guided by intuition, spatial knowledge, and her Nubian heritage, she explores themes of memory, emotion, and embodied knowledge, anchoring her work in place and collective experience. At the core of her practice are attempts to relearn how knowledge is created and perceived, not the academic kind, but the bodily, emotional, and experiential. She draws on feminine and indigenous practices to explore alternative systems of knowing and to question the unwritten rules that shape perception and belonging within the built environment. Through her platform Urban Parachute, she activates public spaces through artistic interventions and workshops, tracing resilience, resistance, and repair while treating the process of making as a site of inquiry. Her recent publication has been exhibited through a participatory reading event at Goethe Institute Alexandria and ADEF Cultural space in Cairo. Her Photography has been exhibited at the Egyptian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the French Institute in Cairo, and the Tahrir Cultural Center at the American University in Cairo. Her film I’m Not on the Verge of Drowning was screened at Zawya Cinema in Cairo. She has participated in a cross-cultural residency through the Danish Egyptian Dialogue Initiative (DEDI) and collaborated with the Athar Lina initiative on an augmented-reality mural highlighting intangible cultural heritage in Cairo’s Al-Khalifa district.
