When I first entered Hollins University, I intended to be an English major. Placed in an introductory class for those interested in the humanities, one of our first assignments was to write an essay on a central theme within the book “The Just City” by Jo Walton; a fantasy novel in which Athena attempts to recreate Plato’s Republic in real life. Analyzing Athena’s role in the narrative, I spoke with my advisor exuberantly about the philosophical relationships between Truth and Power. Seeing my enthusiasm, she emphatically suggested that I take a few Classics and Philosophy courses before deciding on my major. I fell in love with Classical Studies rather quickly! But before, during, and after getting my degree I always found myself asking: What can a Classics degree accomplish outside of study and scholarship? What practical skills can I bring to the table? Through working with amazing people and exploring my interests, I found my answer: Communication. I love my current role as the Communications Specialist at SASA, a non-profit organization dedicated to bolstering the importance and appreciation for the field of Classical Studies. I’ve assisted with a variety of projects, ranging from creating and proofreading high volume mass emails to peer editing blog posts and promotional content. I manage and build our mailing lists and ensure that deadlines are met and publications are timely. Not only have I been enjoying putting my skills to use for an organization that supports a cause I align with, but I’ve been so grateful for the professional development I've received.
