Thanks for checking out my bio. I have a proven track record as a multidisciplinary professional collaborating on works for the Canadian Opera Company (where I was librettist-in-residence working under the guidance of Carlisle Floyd and Hugo Weisgall, paired with composer Denis Gougeon), the Banff Centre (where I was privileged to take classes with composer Louis Applebaum), Pro Coro Canada (as the first librettist for composer John Estacio), Alberta Opera Touring Association and various independent producers. My first book of poetry earned me a place in Melnyk's Literary History of Alberta, my second novel won the inaugural BookTelevision reality TV series based on the 3-Day Novel Competition, and I have been a performer of many world and Canadian premieres, including the Canadian cast of ALW's Phantom of the Opera (plus first international tour) and first Canadian professional production of the Norman/Simon The Secret Garden (as Archibald Craven). His works for stage have been produced in 5 provinces. As a performer he has worked at the National Arts Centre (Ottawa), Carnegie Hall (NYC), Dollywood (Pigeon Forge), Banff Centre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Singapore's Kallang Theatre as well as regional theatres. In addition to my 45 year stage career as creator and re-creator, I spent more than a decade as a literary editor/publisher with The Books Collective, a stint which included producing book versions of three plays by Obie-winner and master puppeteer Ronnie Burkett plus the book adaptation of Darrin Hagen's The Edmonton Queen. I have served on juries of the Ontario Arts Council and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. In addition to writing, I have been directing lyric and non-lyric theatre and, increasingly, video. While maintaining my career, I have also taught Creative Writing for the University of Alberta (10 years), various courses related to editing/rhetoric/theory/ethics in Communication Studies for MacEwan University (20 years). My own education includes a Bachelor of Journalism with combined honours Political Science, a Bachelor of Music in voice performance (which is why I learned so much about sung text), an MFA in Creative Writing, two certificates in Music Theatre from the Banff Centre, and completed the Voluntary Sector and Arts Admin Program at York University (now run by the Schulich School of Business).

Work Experience

Partner at Wooden Door & Associates
January 2, 1992 - Present
Partner in a writing and editing services group. Promotional packages for television and film, reports and booklets for provincial government departments, brochures - anything that needs text or editing! Particularly significant: Equal in Dignity and Rights: Final Report of the Alberta Individual Rights Protection Act Review Panel. Understanding the Labour Market: A Handbook for Practitioners Managing Diversity in the Workplace
Co-Publisher/Editor at The Books Collective
April 1, 2001 - June 1, 2001
"Parent" company and incubator of several independent imprints. Advised on acquisitions, contracting, editing, design, distribution and promotion, grant applications and governance. Imprints included (at times) River/Slipstream, Rowan Books, Hodgepog Books (for children), Dinosaur Soup Books (for children), Partners in Design (Architecture), Tesseract Books (then Canada's largest imprint devoted to speculative fiction) My official association with them began with the acquisition - as a silent partner - of Tesseract Books in 1994. Rowan and Hodgepog eventually became fully independent, Tesseract was bought by EDGE Publishing, Dinosaur Soup Books went dormant after the death of author Gerri Cook, and River/Slipstream went dormant circa 2007 when the remaining principals felt the company had fulfilled its mandate and it was time to focus on our own work as writers and as educators in post-secondary.
Instructor: various courses in Journalism and Professional Communication at MacEwan University (formerly Grant MacEwan Community College)
January 1, 2005 - Present
Originally headhunted for experience in book publishing, the first courses were project management courses for freelancers - starting from client need identification through to finished print product. The number and diversity of courses increased in recognition of the breadth of my experience in the field and my own postsecondary training. The main focus was writing and editing. Courses in composition, in proofreading and factchecking, substantive and structural editing, in writing for periodicals, advanced business writing, magazine editing, book editing, interviewing techniques, ethical practice, organizational communication theory, and genre studies. While still working as a freelancer in the field, I have managed a full course load for the past 15 years.
Librettist-in-Residence at Canadian Opera Company
April 30, 1988 - June 30, 1989
The COC held two competitions: one for composers and one for writers. I did not initially apply, but the COC became aware of my work as a librettist through one of the composer submissions and I was invited to compete. The competition was near closing, so I was only given 76 hours to write an original libretto. I delivered in 48 hours and won the position. I was paired with Denis Gougeon, who was at the time Composer in Residence with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit. We adapted Chekhov's A Proposal of Marriage for a made-for-television one-act comic opera, because CBC Television was one of the sponsors of the new works development program. The element that made it specific to television was that one of the characters was to split and sing with his other self. Workshops were held throughout the year in Toronto (Denis and I continued to live in our respective cities of Montreal and Edmonton, finding distance collaboration worked well for us. CBC Television did indeed want to produce our opera; the COC declined because they did not want to be represented by a comedy despite its blend of traditional opera elements and modern sensibilities. CBC Television then withdrew their sponsorship from the program. The opera was presented as a stage work. The COC held another competition for the next year's librettist-in-residence. I entered and was told i had won, but after telling me, they suspended the results. I was later hired to sing in the workshop of their work-in-progress by Randolph Peters, "Nosferatu", and then consulted in my capacity as a librettist.

Education

Bachelor of Journalism/Combined Honours Political Science at Carleton University
September 1, 1976 - April 30, 1981
Areas of interest: economic reporting, petroleum economies
Bachelor of Music at University of Ottawa

Master of Fine Arts at University of British Columbia

First graduate of the new Optional/Low Residency program, and their first to do a thesis project for stage. Unlike MFAs that require you to specialize in one genre, this one insisted on at least 3. Worked on poetry with Susan Musgrave, novel writing with Gail Anderson-Dargatz, writing for children with Glen Huser (in a seminar with fellow students Paulette Bourgeois, Karmel Kingan and Candas Jane Dorsey), and creative non-fiction.
Music Theatre Studio Ensemble at Banff Centre School of Fine Arts
September 1, 1984 - April 30, 1986
This residential international elite training program selected 12 performers, several composers and writers and designers, and worked to prepare them for the rigours of new music theatre. The schedule was brutal - 8:30 am to 10 pm M-F with a half day on Saturdays. The 7 performers chosen for a second year added touring a new chamber opera to communities throughout Alberta and to Yellowknife (NWT). Accepted as a performer, I was acknowledged by founder Michael Bawtree during my exit interview as their first quintuple threat, having proven myself in acting/singing/dancing/writing/composition. During my time there I wrote 3 libretti for one-act modern operas, two of which were produced there (the composer, David G.H. Parsons, is now the Classical Music and Major Institutions Officer of the Ontario Arts Council) plus a one-act two-hander Caruso Got There First, which was produced at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival - selling out most of its performances. I performed roles in Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tiresias, Albee's Zoo Story, two of Steven McNeff's works (Bible Bill and the Funny Money Gang/The Government Inspector), the first chamber opera of Craig Bohmler (The Harlot and the Monk). performed George Crumb's Songs, Drones and Refrains of Death. As part of my work in the composers' sessions with Louis Applebaum, I wrote a short song cycle for baritone and piano, and I wrote an encore piece for soprano Lois McDonall which she used in concerts.
VSMP (Voluntary Sector and Arts Management Program) at York University
June 30, 1990 - June 30, 1991
I am not sure I have those exact dates right - I recall starting in spring or summer 1990 and finishing a year later, but it wasn't as tied to the school year as other programs, IIRC. A colleague insists the program was 18 months, but I think they are mistaken. Billed as the equivalent to an MBA, but geared toward the non-profit and arts sector, this program seemed like a good fit for someone with my history of board involvement in arts-related organizations. It then provided a foundation for my work in music and literary management, as well as my work on boards of charities and non-profit societies.
