Work Experience

Computer & Multimedia Specialist at Roper Mountain Science Center
October 5, 2015 - Present
Designer and Owner at Overton Iron Works
December 31, 2009 - Present
Using materials hand-salvaged from historic homes, local barns and other locations long abandoned by modern society, I provide new life to the forgotten and discarded. From custom lighting and decorative wall art to headboards and benches, my desire is to create form, function and beauty from the pieces that society has marginalized and left to deteriorate. Having grown up in the mountains of West Virginia and farms of South Carolina, I have a deep appreciation of work done by hand with simple materials like wood and iron. In my world, there is no substitute for traditional craftsmanship. My style is constantly evolving and is dependent on what materials I have available at the time. No two pieces I produce will be exactly the same, and the character that resides in reclaimed elements cannot be reproduced with modern techniques. I adhere to folk style sensibilities that allow us to find joy in imperfections and the freedom of creative expression.
Graphic Designer and Web Developer at First Presbyterian Church of Greenville
August 31, 2008 - August 31, 2015
At First Pres, I work on a team of four. While that is a big communications team for a church, it leaves much to be done and job descriptions are interwoven. My official title is Graphic Designer and Web Developer, but you may find me doing graphic design, web updates, video and audio editing, motion graphics, IT, and printer/plotter management on any given day. We produce weekly and quarterly print media, a weekly TV and radio show, and an e-newsletter, in addition to day to day communications responsibilities. I play an integral role in getting each of these pieces completed and out to the congregation. Working at First Presbyterian Church taught me how to multitask efficiently and how to blend multiple medias to achieve a desired message.
Landscape Architect at Melorse Design Group
December 1, 2004 - May 30, 2008
Melrose Design Group was a landscape architecture studio that dealt with high-end residential communities in Western North Carolina. It played a huge role in my development as a design professional. My main responsibilities included master plan rendering, road design, AutoCAD production and revision, detailing, and the production of marketing materials. MDG taught me what it meant to work hard and how to finish what I start. It also taught me how to juggle different projects simultaneously and how to work with many different personalities and management styles. Sadly, Melrose Design Group fell victim to the economic downturn and was forced to shut its doors.

    Making Science Wearable

T-Shirt Design for Roper Mountain Science Center

Challenge: Transform complex scientific concepts into engaging, wearable designs that would inspire curiosity and spark conversations beyond the science center walls.

The Vision: Create apparel that functions as both merchandise and educational tool—pieces that visitors would proudly wear while spreading scientific wonder throughout the community.

    Design Philosophy

Rather than simply slapping a logo on fabric, I approached each design as a mini-lesson in visual science communication. The goal was to capture the excitement of discovery that happens at Roper Mountain and translate it into graphics that would resonate with learners of all ages.

    Key Design Elements:

    • Educational storytelling through visual metaphors that make complex concepts accessible
    • Bold, museum-quality graphics that stand out while maintaining scientific accuracy
    • Multi-generational appeal ensuring designs worked for both curious kids and science-loving adults
    • Conversation starters that would naturally lead to discussions about science and learning

    The Impact

These weren’t just t-shirts—they became mobile ambassadors for the science center. Every person wearing one became a walking advertisement for hands-on learning and scientific exploration, extending Roper Mountain’s educational mission far beyond their physical location.

The project demonstrated how thoughtful design can transform simple merchandise into powerful tools for community engagement and brand awareness, turning visitors into advocates who proudly represent the wonder of science in their daily lives.
