Virginia based artist, Alyssa Ruby, has honed her extensive painting and sculptural skills since she was young. She studied at Flagler College majoring in Fine Art with a focus in illustration. During her time at Flagler, she exhibited at Kenan Gallery with a series of digital illustrations apart of an exhibition entitled “Magic Underground”. She also created and presented a solo show, “where”, at Crisp-Ellert Art Museum. The exhibition included a series of illustrative paintings and a sculpture exploring the magic in memory and transition. Graduating early with Summa Cum Laude she found inspiration from a natural dyes and textiles course and went on to pursue an MFA in Fibers at Savannah College of Art and Design. She explored beading techniques, felting, print and pattern, and digital production that fuel her artistic practice. Over the course of her degree, she has installed works for multiple shows at Pepe Hall, including a group graduate student exhibition and Open Studio (2023). In the summer of 2022, she took on the role of Art Intern at Kohls with the Home team. Through this experience she produced print and pattern for assorted products including blanket throws, candle decals, and other home products. From there she continued to develop work for her thesis exhibition at Cedar House Gallery, “The Valley of In-Between” (2023). The exhibition explores the threshold of transition, the in-between, and how this journey leads one to a space of growing upwards and beyond. Earlier this year she completed a large scale outdoor mural and interactive installation for Dewees Island Conservancy’s Nature Center in Dewees Island, South Carolina. Since then she has completed two murals for Walmart exploring community.

    paper Nature Center Installation

I worked closely with the Dewees Island Conservancy to work up a proposal with mockup of the large-scale outdoor interactive installation as well as estimated costs and timeline for the project. I created exciting compositions and harmonious color schemes to best fit the clients vision. The installation is an educational tool exploring the stages of the oceans tides as well as the animals and plants that co-exist there. The installation is to be used for the conservationist’s of Dewees Island to utilize with visiting groups of all ages. I first did research to understand the best materials for outdoor use and creatively problem solved to find a balance of durability and engaging surface treatment. I then contacted multiple production companies to find the best producer and cost for the manufacturing of the interactive components of the installation. Utilizing Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop I created files with art work to be digitally printed onto ACM for durability. On site, I hand painted a 7’ x 9’ mural. Throughout the process I communicated with the client on the progress of the work. I installed the interactive pieces and problem solved on site to ensure the piece worked smoothly and efficiently.
