Child abandonment must be studied from the perspective of socially constructed prac-
tices imposed by the powerful institutions. Shared speculations on ‘wrong’ and ‘right’
behavior lie at the core of social constructionist theory, which I apply to ground this
research. Historically, Church and state forces embedded morality within traditional
institutions, where any deviance was feared to put at risk a stable social order. This
thesis includes a gender perspective on how females are deprived of their moral
agency to reinforce valorization of the pro-motherhood stance. Throughout this paper,
I reveal how child abandonment has been recently attempted to fall under regulation
by the interfering body of the UNCRC committee in the Czech Republic. The Babybox
association, working primarily to rescue anonymously left newborns, is central for the
empirical analysis of the socially constructed matter of abandonment. I first intend to
emphasize the present-day solutions, associated problematics, preceding context of
the study, and concerns over the use of baby boxes. Public comments from domestic
media portals are analyzed to show how different viewpoints reflect institutionalized
ideas of child abandonment. In the end, I interpret the findings through the Dual Con-
cern Conflict Resolution Matrix to represent diverse constructions.
