You will laugh! You will cry! Barbara Pement takes us on a rollicking ride through more than couple decades of her life in a Christian commune. Here is a personal, ‘inside the walls’ account of an extraordinary people, Jesus People, USA. Coming out of the late 60’s and into the 70’s, the Jesus Movement began in California as a counter punch to the sexual revolution, urban riots, political upheaval, and dramatic assassinations that swept the nation. A group of hippy-types, marked by life altering personal encounters with Christ, formed a community in Chicago around the idea of not only sharing life, but sharing all earthly possessions, banding together to do good in the world and bring Jesus to everybody. You will be amazed! You will be appalled! You will not be bored! Pement is an educated, sophisticated journalist with a great sense of humor. That’s the value here. Pement’s account is inside and personal. It’s not from someone who came and stayed a year, had a bad experience and left sour grapes. It’s not some clinical assessment from an academic ivory tower. Some will be disappointed because they want dirt, more dirt, criticism, and ugliness. I appreciate the spirit in which Pement writes. She is forthright, honest, transparent, but avoids sweeping generalizations and certainly sweeping negative generalizations. Her writing is entertaining, interesting, informative. Jesus People at their largest and most active were a force in Chicago. A resident myself during those years, I encountered their influence through their businesses, their engagement in the arts, their do-gooding in the neighborhood, and their Christian influence on evangelicalism across the country. I know Barbara Pement, so as I read, I hear her voice. I hear her laugh. I hear the serious tone as she touches on more weighty matters. This account will interest those looking to understand various movements and influences in American evangelicalism. It is informative to those intrigued by groups making positive, sociological impact in desperate inner-city neighborhoods. It will prove intriguing to those interested in human exploration of spirituality and personal experience. Charles Lyons City Hope International

As a regular visitor to the Jesus People USA (JPUSA) community, there was usually a broad smile and sometimes a “Jesus loves you” greeting. At times I wondered what was underneath that warm welcome. I myself would find it difficult to maintain such joy living in a large crowded community with meager resources. Barbara’s writing pulled back some of these layers. She skillfully immerses the reader into the culture of her community that was JPUSA from the late 1970’s to 2000. It starts with her fresh enthusiasm for this lifestyle which meant sacrificing so much in order to make a difference. She saw healing changes in many lives, experienced camaraderie and purposeful living. As the years went on, she describes the slow erosion of this spark, as the misalignment between her and JPUSA became more glaring. There was no safe landing place for her gifts, passions and vision. Remarkably her fire was never quenched. Barbara describes the forgiveness process she underwent led by God, that kept the embers alive. Her personal anecdotes gives life to the painful process she had to go through. The courage and wisdom needed to leave the community led to deep healing. God provided that safe landing place so the gifts He had endowed her with would now have opportunity to flourish. This book is a resurrection of sorts. I am honored to write this endorsement! Intriguing, curious, brilliant and inspiring. This memoir reads like a brilliant screenplay, you’ll delight in the journey as you join Barbara in her adventures into ‘confusing issues that cloud the mind.’ You’ll meander through ‘foibles and follies,’ moments of deep darkness illuminated by a hope which couldn’t be extinguished. Barbara is an excellent writer and journalist who lovingly weathered one psychological storm after the next while continually honoring her family of faith, at great cost but with no bitterness, even after realizing that the utopia she’d fallen in love with was indeed, gone. This is a book that will ‘unlock doors and remind you that ‘forgiveness is an ongoing attitude,’ even when it seems your dreams are shattered, God has the final say.
