Brian L.H. Gunter is a passionate and experienced film composer. When in his element, Brian is blending symphonic and chamber scoring orchestras with modern synth and guitar. Brian strives to approach each score fresh with his own style while leaning into his influences like Benjamin Wallfisch, Alan Silvestri, Nicholas Britel, Ludwig Göransson, or James Newton Howard, grounding each score with Brian’s own twisted take on story immersive sound design. Having scored for a range in feature and short films from horror, drama, comedy or animation, the one thread that marks a score from Brian comes from his highly empathic drive to identify the essential emotional markers of the story and its characters, and using the environments of those characters to organically tie the score to their emotional cores. As someone on the neurodivergent spectrum (autism & ADHD), Brian has always been deeply connected with of emotion, experiencing them more intensely that most, and has resulted with him viewing life through a unique lense. Brian attributes growing up with film and other visual media with their accompanying scores in particular for being able to develop his perspective, he says ,”Being neurodivergent adds an extra ten layers of difficulty processing and contextualizing emotion. In myself, and of others. Music makes me feel emotions in a very clear way. The visual nature of film and musical scores helped me contextualize emotion in a specific and effective way for me. So, in a very genuine sense my being able to score films and provide emotional support for visual storytelling feels a lot like giving back to what helped make me who I am.” The result has been a diverse and at times eclectic, but cohesive body of work. Whether through classic orchestra, chamber ensembles, swing bands, electronic hybrid, musical theater, or highly stylized period work. Not as a “Jack of all trades”, but as someone who thrives creatively to overcome limitations and always deliver to any project. Brian’s personal style, musical tastes, and emotional connection to serve the story is always at its heart.
