I'm a prolific author with more than thirty years of professional writing and editing experience, beginning with various Chicago-area advertising and publishing companies. Since going freelance, I've written numerous novels and screenplays, none of which have been sold. My extensive list of writing credits includes: “A Storm of Lead” pays tribute to sci-fi Westerns like "Firefly" and "Westworld," as well as the classic 1960s Westerns like “Have Gun Will Travel” and “Wanted: Dead or Alive.” The 54-page pilot is designed as a low-budget film: only six speaking parts, one internal location (and a few brief external shots in the dust storm), but with all the gunfire and testosterone you’d expect from a Clint Eastwood film, with subtle inclusions of sci-fi elements. Pilot episode: https://tinyurl.com/mszb6f7f Pitch deck: https://tinyurl.com/ye7ct6v3 One of my favorite pieces is "Blackmail Under Glass," a 1940s film noir detective story that's been described as "The Maltese Falcon meets James Bond," as the New Orleans hero travels the globe to prevent the nefarious schemes of the most hated man in the world. "Blackmail" was a finalist in the original Project Greenlight competition. https://tinyurl.com/4b22yeht I’ve also written the TV pilot “Silencers,” which deals with the very real Men in Black, which combines the material of “The X-Files” with all the dread and danger of “The Sopranos.” “Silencers” has been a finalist in multiple screenplay competitions as both a pilot and, combined with its second episode, as a 2-hour feature film: Synopsis: https://tinyurl.com/3523ttv7 Pilot episode: https://tinyurl.com/4k2et28w Five-page pitch bible: https://tinyurl.com/3466yejr The synopsis for the pilot “H is for Human” is for a planned series indebted to the original “The Twilight Zone,” concerning compassionate robots, sentient AI, alien pets, and dangerous futures: https://tinyurl.com/yc6kf6xm A short proof-of-concept piece on the Star Wars fan favorite Boba Fett, written a decade before “The Mandalorian” was even conceived. All action, lots of flying and fighting, and a surprise twist ending (which parallels the plotline of "The Mandalorian" suspiciously closely): https://tinyurl.com/f29249s “Aces Over Bullets” is a Western short where “Dirty” Dave Rudabaugh meets up with the legendary Doc Holliday, where Dave teaches Doc how to shoot, and Doc teaches Dave how to play cards. Based on actual events. 14 pages, five characters, and a couple of great fight scenes, including one inspired by Achilles' sword fight in "Troy." https://tinyurl.com/yesy339h “Snow on the Canyon” is a short script converted from my award-winning story about the Trinity nuclear tests, and owes a lot to the original "The Twilight Zone." https://tinyurl.com/4sta38hk Here's a short resume highlighting my science-fiction and fantasy writing credits: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17G7s9JBI7QbE0g9eoeJokOHb5NSOAy_w/view?usp=sharing

Words and sentences have never been more urgently needed and embraced by the denizens of the twenty-first century. It may sound paradoxical against all the hubris of fleeting presentations and instantaneous retorts, but their "loud" sounds are just cries wailing for soothing whispers composed of wise and intelligent expressions. Many of us have been left stranded as vacuous souls longing for the calm, but lively, storytellers and present-day philosophers. I stand to humbly claim to be such a storyteller and philosopher. Nurtured and trained at a liberal arts college, I was required to take Humanities courses—in addition to those for my Computer Engineering major—such as English Literature (2 courses), Philosophy (2 courses), Western Civilization (2 courses) and Theology (1 course), providing me with both the challenge and opportunity to hone my writing skills. Such was the background of my distinguished penmanship. In 2006 I won a book competition at the Free Software Magazine (online, issue 14) and again in 2007 (issue 16). Here are the links to the two newsletters that announced my wins (look for "Johannes Hutabarat"): [] http://freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/fsm_newsletter_30_oct_2006/ [] http://freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/fsm_newsletter_09_apr_2007/ Over the years, I've also learned and acquired a number of other skills related to multimedia. Creating and designing logos, cafe menu, and pamphlets—along with, inevitably, editing videos—have been some of the fruits of this newly found talent and passion. As for being a poet and vocalist, I've possessed and tended those flairs since an early, tender age of 6 years old. Strong emotions coming out from experiencing and observing forceful currents of life are the provenance of this poetry composition and vocal performances.

I started writing a (short-lived, admittedly) daily newspaper when I was seven, a content creator before that was even a thing. While the stint in journalism was fleeting, the love of writing and story telling has endured. After working for 15 years in the wine world in a communications heavy role, I decided to move into freelance writing in 2022 and help my clients with their story-telling, their brand identities and their customer engagement with effective and clear communications. While we hear that AI is taking over every aspect of business, I'm in no doubt that the human touch and personal relations remain vital to developing authentic and enduring customer engagement. Whether it's EDMs, web content, social media strategies and posts or creating and executing a communications plan, I communicate a brand's voice efficiently and clearly (helping find that voice along the way if needs be) and thrive on seeing the results. I love working with smaller organisations where there are stories to be told and with engaging people behind and within them. I have worked as the Publicist for the arts and music festivals driving sales and raising the profile of these arts festivals through press releases, media engagement and web and newsletter content. I have written web stories for Regional Tourism Offices, drawing visitors into the world of the Upper Clutha and Southern Lakes regions and I work with a zero-waste enterprise, engaging with businesses and individuals through the communications arm to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions as the region looks to a carbon zero 2030. From small to vast: there I go! I have worked as bid writer, editor and proofreader for a number of EU tenders. Delving in the minutiae of EU bureaucracy was a very different kettle of fish but one which I greatly enjoyed. Keeping text tight, polished and very much to the rules is a fantastic exercise in restraint while the proofreading element requires the keenest of eyes with a fast delivery, two demands that don't always go hand in hand and which kept me on my toes. I turn around content ahead of schedule for finance based clients overseas, providing on-point content for the in-house and external comms. It took me a while to be the anonymous wordsmith but it suits me well. I write communications and marketing plans for businesses that simply don't have the time to do this - we've all been there. Sometimes it doesn't take much to get them on the right track, at other times, it's been a longer process but we got there in the end and they're going from strength to strength. I spend time with small businesses tightening up their web content and maximising their customer engagement and ensure their message is clear, concise and SEO friendly. I had to do it solo for a decade and a half, so it's lovely to make things easier for others in the same situation.
