    uniE621 Mind & Matter
Check out the project here! - https://www.twine.net/signin When applying for my internship for Themester with Indiana University, I wanted to create something that matched their current theme. At the time, it was “Identity,” something purposefully broad so we could curate a wide variety of events and learning opportunities across campus that touched on all the different things that make up who a person is: culture, personality, traits, physical and mental makeup… for this artwork, I wanted to focus on the combination of both the physical and the mental identity of humanity, how our biology and personality merges to make up the unique combination of who we each are. This project also gave me the opportunity to expand my illustrator skills, particularly with merging and cutting shapes. I credit this passion project with the significant jump I made in my skills with illustrator.
    uniE621 All Talk!
Check out the project here! - https://www.twine.net/signin This was an exchange project we did for my first semester in the BFA. We were supposed to make 20 editions of whatever we wanted to give to each of our classmates, with the stipulation that it had to be physical deliverable that we could hand to someone on the day of the exchange. I decided to make a guide on the art of conversation and linguistcs called All Talk!, which leads the audience through different possible scenarios they might find themselves in when talking to someone and what they should do to make the conversation flow smoothly. The books touches on all the different ways people communicate and why, from neural differences, body language, and even different languages. I made most of the illustrations in either Illustrator or Procreate, but largely used InDesign for the text placement. I had a lot of fun creating each spread for each kind of communication style, and I really enjoyed the reactions of my class as I gave them their present! It was very rewarding to not only create the book from scratch, but print and bind the book as well with the help of my grandma and her sewing machine.
uniE621 Themester: Lux et Veritas Poster
Check out the project here! - https://www.twine.net/signin For my final year working at Themester, I was offered the opportunity to create my very own poster to pass out at campus events that celebrate the theme “Lux et Veritas”, Indiana University’s latin motto that means “Light and Truth.” This theme was not only chosen because it is the motto of the university but also so we could celebrate the upcoming 2024 total solar eclipse that would be viewed later in the school year due to IU being in the eclipse’s path of totality. Because of the historic event, I wanted to use my poster design to talk about the literal light show we would be getting later in the semester that would no doubt bring the community together. Since the event has to do with astronomy, I focused on a mid-century modern design style since the 50’s were one of the most iconic graphic design eras for space imagery. I used both Procreate and Illustrator for various design elements depending on the shapes, textures, and colors I needed for the poster. Making the exaggerated shapes of the buildings, people, and celestial bodies in the poster was super fun, but not as fun as getting to pass the posters out to excited students around campus and hearing how thrilled they were to get a piece of art for their dorm rooms to celebrate the eclipse. As sad as I was to see Themester go, creating this poster felt like a beautiful send off to a great career making work for the students of IU.
    uniE621 Small Town Seanchaí
Check out the project here! - https://www.twine.net/signin For my final project in the BFA, I not only turned in my final thesis project, but got to put together my own exhibit at IU’s Grunwald Gallery in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design to show my work. As an ode to my time in the BFA, my journey as an artist, and my journey to find my own identity and purpose with the help of my loved ones, I created the book Small Town Seanchaí. I draw on my one past both in my own lifetime and centuries back in my family’s history to explore why humans create and utilize stories as a part of their culture. I’ve always been fascinated with the beats of a story cycle that so closely mirrors our own lives and the journeys we take over and over again. Analyzing story structure decodes why humans do the confusing, fantastic things we do. It allows us to see our own paths in life and where they could take us, and where they will inevitably lead us back to. Examining my own Irish heritage was a pivotal part of this process. Seanchaí are significant figures throughout Irish history with the crucial responsibility of passing down oral history through recitation of poems, songs, and folklore. My book details my own personal journey falling in love with storytelling as a practice in the modern day and how it unexpectedly led me to connecting with something much bigger than myself. Not only my own past but the future and strength of the human spirit. My family helped me create a wonderful exhibition that celebrated both the past, present, and future of where our art and stories will take us, and how the people in my life will stand with me as I grow. This project was the perfect end to my time at IU, and the perfect start to a lifelong journey as an artist and storyteller.
    uniE621 Don't Lose Your Marbles!
Check out the project here! - https://www.twine.net/signin This was another project created for the purpose of applying to Themester. I had recently learned how to image trace textures in Illustrator and apply them as clipping masks. I noticed that a photo of bubbles I had taken in my sink recently reminded me of the inside of a marble, and lately I had felt like I was losing my mind from all of my school work. So I combined the two of them into a cute sticker design that I would’ve loved to have on my laptop! While I’ve never been able to get them printed off, I learned a lot from the process of creating these stickers and how to use photoshop models to create mockups!
    uniE621 Just Sum Parts!
Check out the project here! - https://www.twine.net/signin For my second thesis project in the BFA, I wanted to explore the idea of personality and identity, and what makes someone who they are. While we all have different parts of ourselves that we use for different situations, it is the combination of these parts and how we use them that creates a unique blend of personality for ourselves. I first heard the idea of the whole of something being greater than the some of its parts from Gestalt Design Theory, but it applies to psychology as well. Using this understanding of design and identity, I created the following thesis: “Rather than categorizing every specific part of our identity, we must look at the whole picture of who we are and live as a whole being greater and different than just the sum of our parts.” To illustrate this idea, I picked a deliverable that often focuses on archetypes and splits the human experience into different sectors - tarot cards! (Making a tarot card deck also used to be a project in an earlier graphic design class that I was bummed I never got to do, so this was how I worked around that.) I split each of the 20 cards into 20 parts of my personality, with each card opening up on the inside to reveal a message you might need to hear, celebrating the positives in your life or giving you inspiration to deal with the negatives. Then I created a stand for the cards that depicts myself as a whole unique person, not just the combination of the cards of the deck. This way, I can look at both the unique person I’ve become through my experiences both as a whole and broken up into specific parts depending on what I need at the time. I am super satisfied with how the project turned out, and although my illustration skills have certainly improved since this project, the combination of writing and illustration is something I would prove to explore more deeply throughout my time in the BFA program.
    uniE621 Thanks to Them/Me
Check out the project here! - https://www.twine.net/signin This was my first thesis project in the BFA program at IU. I wanted to explore the duality of community and individualism, and the effects of having strong support systems on a person’s journey. The book is a palindromic novel, meaning that it contains two stadiums that can be read both forward and backwards, telling the same story of a knight fighting a dragon with the only difference being whether or not she asks for help along the way. This book has 120 pages and was made in a little under 3 months of the semester, and while I can certainly say that my illustration skills have come a much longer way since this book’s creation, I look back proudly in what I was able to create in such a short time frame. Storyboarding, illustrating, printing, and binding my own book instilled me with the confidence to create and self direct my own projects, which has not only been a crucial skill in my academic career but an important first step in making much more artwork both with my own talents and the support and love of those around me.
