FERNANDO GROSTEIN ANDRADE
Director · Writer · Producer
Brazilian filmmaker based in Los Angeles. He works across narrative and documentary, with a focus on crime, political power, and identity. He wrote, directed, and produced the narrative feature Abe (2019), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, starring Noah Schnapp, Seu Jorge, and Mark Margolis. The film opened theatrically in Brazil, Japan, and Germany. Its U.S. release was reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic into a digital rollout, drawing positive reviews in Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Wall Street Journal.
He also directed Wandering Heart, a documentary feature on Caetano Veloso featuring Pedro Almodóvar, Michelangelo Antonioni, and David Byrne, produced in association with Paramount Brasil.
His documentary Quebrando o Tabu (Breaking the Taboo), produced in its international version by Richard Branson and narrated by Morgan Freeman, was built around interviews with heads of state including former U.S.
Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Distributed in 22 countries, the film expanded into a two-season
television series and a digital platform that has reached approximately 20 million followers across its combined
channels. His subsequent documentary Quebrando Mitos (Breaking Myths), an independent examination of
political extremism and masculinity in Brazil, was released directly on YouTube in 2022.
In television, he directed five episodes and produced the drama series Jailers (Carcereiros), winner of the
MIPDrama Grand Jury Award at MIPTV.
He co-directed This Is a Test with Fernando Siqueira, a short film commissioned by NASA and transmitted beyond Mars orbit aboard the Psyche mission via a record-breaking deep-space laser communication system, marking one of the first instances of narrative content broadcast from deep space.
Peter the Killer (Pedrinho Matador), a true crime project, was selected from over 800 submissions at the
NBCUniversal LAUNCH Unscripted Pitch Accelerator and developed with Universal Television Alternative Studio.
Other narrative projects include Something Wild, in development with 3AD (Daniel Dae Kim).
His commercial work, including campaigns for Volkswagen, Coca-Cola, and Billboard across Latin America and the United States, has earned nine Cannes Lions, including two Gold Lions.
A former columnist for Veja and Folha de São Paulo, Brazil’s largest magazine and newspaper, he has long
engaged with political and cultural debate beyond the screen. He is a Young Global Leader of the World Economic
Forum.
Beyond filmmaking, he founded Spray Filmes and NWB, a production company and digital media network with anexit valued at approximately US$12 million. He now leads Cosmic Dog Studios, where he develops character-driven crime and political thrillers for film and television. Cosmic Dog is also an early investor in Inner AI, a Brazilian artificial intelligence platform recently valued at approximately US$100 million.
