I am a composer of new works for acoustic and electric ensembles combining elements of jazz, contemporary classical music, experimentalism, popular music, R&B, and improvisation. I am also an adept vocalist and improvisor on trumpet, piano, and jazz organ. I currently work as producer, studio engineer, arranger and transcriber, and educator.     More than 10 years since my last album, my next album is a different turn: Interwoven compositions negotiating the passage of time moving forward while reflecting further and further into the past. Composed within two large “song suites”, this initial offering of my upcoming album is called “5-10 For Loon Lake/Water Games”. I performed vocals, keyboards, and drums, and hired international musicians for the electric bass, electric guitar, and string quartet parts. This has not been released yet, but please enjoy this preview-- I am proud of it! Composed, arranged, recorded, mixed, and mastered by me. ©2021 Gene V Baker

    In the aughts, I led a big band in Oakland, CA with the mission of delivering exciting compositions, tight R&B grooves, and group improvisation structures to audiences throughout the Bay. One of my favorite projects to date, the instrumentation consists of lead vocals & keyboards (performed by me), 2 trumpets, 2 saxes, 2 trombones, steel pan, vibraphone, drums, percussion, guitar, and two basses. ©2009 Gene V Baker
