Work Experience

Illustration & Animation Projects (Portfolio) at Independent / University projects
January 1, 2023 - Present
Created a range of illustration and animation works, including The Dreamer’s Illustrated Children’s Book (written and illustrated original fantasy story for ages 5–10), producing 24 illustrated spreads in Procreate, designing cover and page layouts, and building a physical prototype using bookbinding. Also developed The Sound of Cinema illustrated concert leaflet (print-ready layout using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop). Researched London Bridge’s history and translated key moments into a visual narrative, then created 2D animation sequences using After Effects and Photoshop. Produced a personal travel illustration collection inspired by South Asia and other destinations, combining watercolour, printmaking, and collage research into finished pieces.

    playing cards
This project is a custom playing card design inspired by Chinese culture during the Han Dynasty, incorporating historically influenced clothing and visual elements. The concept reimagines the traditional King, Queen, and Jack cards as a narrative scene about power and ambition. The story portrays the Queen overcoming the King and the Jack to claim the throne. Inspired by the historical reality that women were often used as political pawns, I wanted to reverse this dynamic and depict the Queen as a strategic and determined figure. The artwork was created using a mixed-media process. I first drew the illustrations by hand with ink pens, then painted them with watercolor on separate watercolor paper. The linework and color layers were later combined and refined digitally in Photoshop. Through this project, I explored character design, visual storytelling, and the integration of historical research into game-related illustration https://www.behance.net/giuliamuzzare2…
    Lady of the Lake
This animation is a personal adaptation of The Arthurian Legend, focusing on the Lady of the Lake, the mystical guardian of Excalibur. Created in Adobe After Effects, the project combines illustrated scenes with parallax effects, layered motion, and stop-motion techniques to create depth and a cinematic atmosphere. Alongside the visual production, I developed the sound design and editing using audio software such as Adobe Audition, Audacity, and Premiere Pro's audio tools, combining ambient sounds and music to enhance the emotional impact of the story. Through atmospheric visuals, movement, and sound, the film explores themes of memory, loss, and remembrance, serving as a tribute to those whose stories were never told. By blending mythology with animation and immersive audio, the project reimagines a timeless legend while highlighting the enduring power of storytelling. https://youtu.be/F_WPYgOe7fI?si=wa4ZeLuVpPyOD7El https://giuliamuzzarelli.altervista.org/projects/animation.html…
The story of the London Bridge
This animation explores the rich history of London Bridge, from its medieval origins as a bustling place where people lived, worked, and traded, to its eventual replacement in the twentieth century. Developed in Adobe After Effects, the project is based on extensive historical research and combines factual events with engaging visual storytelling through a 2D animation style. Accompanied by medieval-inspired music, the narrative brings to life key moments from the bridge's history, including the story of a merchant's daughter who fell into the River Thames and was rescued by a young man, whom her father later rewarded with her hand in marriage. The animation also depicts significant historical events such as riots, fires, and the daily life of the residents who once occupied the bridge's shops and houses. The story concludes with the decline and replacement of the old London Bridge, ending with its famous sale to an American businessman and the construction of the modern bridge that stands today. Through animation, sound, and historical research, the project aims to reconnect audiences with a forgotten chapter of London's history. https://youtu.be/bKm7fV5ka70?si=mSo-YapRbCybPpSH https://giuliamuzzarelli.altervista.org/projects/animation.html…
    The Sound of Cinema
This cut-out project was inspired by the Sound of Cinema podcast episode about Death on the Nile. I experimented with cut-out, colour contrasts, and shadow projection using a handmade light box to translate the exotic music of the movie into visual illustration. https://giuliamuzzarelli.altervista.org/projects/cutout.html https://www.behance.net/gallery/244024565/death-on-the-nile_the-sound-of-cinema/modules/1408534641…
    Mr. Puffin
Mr. Puffin is a 14-spread silent children's book inspired by the life of a puffin and its natural habitat. The project was developed after a visit to the Faroe Islands, where I had the opportunity to observe puffins during their migration and breeding season. Created entirely in Procreate, the story follows the adventures of a clumsy yet determined seabird as it navigates the challenges of daily life. Through expressive character design, atmospheric coastal landscapes, and carefully crafted lighting, I aimed to create an engaging visual narrative that celebrates the resilience of puffins while subtly raising awareness of the threats they face due to climate change. https://giuliamuzzarelli.altervista.org/projects/dreamers.html https://www.behance.net/giuliamuzzare2…
    Meaningful Connection
For the Connection project, I created a 12-spread children's book illustration inspired by my neighborhood. Developed in Procreate, the story follows an elderly man living among city skyscrapers and explores themes of loneliness, community, and belonging. To create a melancholic yet cozy atmosphere, I used soft lighting, deep shadows, and warm interior scenes. Windows and balconies act as visual frames throughout the book, offering glimpses into the lives of different residents and highlighting the contrast between physical proximity and emotional isolation. This framing device reinforces the story's message about the importance of human connection within an urban environment. https://giuliamuzzarelli.altervista.org/projects/dreamers.html https://www.behance.net/portfolio/editor?project_id=244022333…
