Production Bug Fixes for WordPress Plugins Used at Scale
Summary
Five years of shipping reviewed, production-safe bug fixes for commercial WordPress plugins at WPMU DEV — including SmartCrawl, Forminator, Hustle Pro, Smush, Shipper and Beehive.
Challenge
Bugs in plugins installed on real customer sites are rarely simple. A defect can come from the plugin, the theme, hosting, cache layers or a third-party integration — and a careless fix can break thousands of sites on the next update. Every change has to be diagnosed properly, reviewed and safe to release.
Solution
Working inside established Git and pull-request review workflows, and following WordPress Coding Standards, I delivered targeted fixes such as:
- Sitemap index pagination corrections in SmartCrawl
- Gutenberg link-popover compatibility fixes
- Conditional SEO interface behaviour, shown only when relevant
- Clean, non-fatal error handling for invalid third-party API credentials
- Compatibility and defect fixes across PHP, WordPress REST APIs and Gutenberg interfaces
For escalated cases, I separated plugin behaviour from theme, hosting, cache and third-party causes, protected affected sites with temporary MU-plugin patches, and handed product developers root-cause reports they could act on immediately.
Result
Maintainable, reviewed changes shipped to production plugins — fixed at the root cause, not patched over, and documented so the team could support them long-term.
