I arrived in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and started my career as an apprentice engineer at Sunset Sound Studios. I was soon recruited by George Massenburg to be his assistant, and we worked on platinum-selling projects for The Emotions, Deniece Williams, and Earth, Wind & Fire. When George took time off to build a studio, I knocked on Freddie Perren’s door and became his main engineer, contributing to iconic tracks such as Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive. Later, I joined The Gap Band, engineering four albums including Gap Band III, which yielded two #1 singles. I’ve had the privilege to engineer for Aretha Franklin, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, and Celine Dion, and I’ve mixed movie scores with John Barnes, including Daughters of the Dust, a film recognized by the National Film Registry. When the pandemic struck, I set up a mixing room at home and continue to work remotely with artists around the world.
