My name is Mary Bryton Nahwegahbow, and I’m an emerging First Nations singer, songwriter, and musician.. I recently completed my Bachelor of Music at Queen’s University’s DAN School of Drama & Music, where I focused on vocal performance, music theory, and songwriting. Before that, I graduated with distinction from the Vocal Program at Canterbury High School in Ottawa, which laid a strong foundation for my artistic journey. Throughout my musical career, I’ve been honoured to receive several awards, including the 2021 “Rising Star” title at the Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards and the SOCAN Foundation and SiriusXM Young Canadian Songwriter Award in 2018, which I received at the age of 16. One of the most meaningful aspects of my work is promoting Indigenous languages and culture. I perform the Canadian national anthem in English, French, and Anishinaabemowin at both Indigenous and national events to honour Truth and Reconciliation and celebrate the beauty of our languages. I also use my platform to give back—raising funds and awareness for Indigenous-led organizations that support youth through arts and education. In my free time, I love writing new songs and collaborating with other musicians. This fall, I’ll be attending the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology (OIART) to further develop my technical skills in music production. I’m excited to grow as a producer and help bring more Indigenous voices and stories to life through sound. My work is driven by a deep love for music, language, and community—and I’m grateful for the journey ahead.
