Hi, I’m Emily Maloney, an animator, story artist, and illustrator with a strong foundation in traditional art and cinematic visual storytelling.
My experience includes directing and animating short films using a range of techniques—including 2D digital, paper, stop-motion, and CG animation, as well as creating storyboards for independent short-form projects in both live-action and animation. Films I’ve worked on have screened at festivals and galleries such as Employees Only Cineclub, the FVNMA & Sound Festival at the Gene Siskel Film Center, and the SAIC ExFest Showcase in Chicago, IL.
I’m open to remote work and relocation opportunities and excited to bring my creativity and enthusiasm to new projects.

Project Documentation:
This project has gone through a lot of iterations! Originally, it was a stop-motion film that was going to be approximately 5-7 minutes focused on a tired trucker in a roadside diner. Then it became a 2D animation, and broadened in scope. While I screened a version of the film as my undergraduate thesis, I was unhappy with the story and sat on it for two years, eventually completing a new script recently, which I am currently creating storyboards for.
Here is a sample of boards I’m currently working on
And another board:

Here is the script, feel free to parse it.
Clips
Here are some pencil tests and clips of animation from the project:
Stop-Motion
As I said, originally this was going to be Stop-Motion animated. Here are some stuff from that stage, from photos of sets and props and puppets, to test footage.

Storyboards for the film
Photo in-studio of the filmmaking process.
You can see some cut-outs props were stock photos, others were my own drawings. Originally, I had planned to create everything physically as stop motion in the way Gilliam would. However, seeing the opportunity to learn how to use Adobe Animate, I eventually transitioned into scanning the props and animating them digitally
Here are two time lapses of the animation process you can watch:

Optimal Noise Exhibition selection, screened at the Employees Only Cineclub in Chicago, IL
I created storyboards through advised revisions with the director (see their website here), and I also served as co-cinematographer and camera operator (using an Arriflex 16mm camera) for the film.

An absurdist video using a combination of found footage from old Dunkin’ Donuts Commericals, and my own digital videos and animation. The animation in project was created using the rotoscoping software EbSynth, which interpolated my illustrations over my digital videos to create an fluid and eerie doughnut monster.
