The Giving is an expression of honor, gratitude, and fondness for the essential nature of women. The provenance of the imagined female subject are remnants of women existing in actuality that become a catalyst for Humes’ creative approach and vernacular. The subject’s defiant and regal vitality lives beyond the canvas. Her gaze initially demands attention from the viewer, allowing a survey of the environment that encompasses her that concludes with the inceptive encounter. The foliage, flowers, and fruit represent forms of life serving as the necessary permanent act of giving women their flowers while they can smell them.
