paper Using an expert review to analyze ausability issues with an online literary magazine

    THE PROBLEM DEFINED
Based on my preliminary interview with the site owner, this literary long-form reading site looked ok on first glance: the visual design gave an attractive first impression and it looked like it was doing well. The analytics showed lots of pageviews.

But, beneath the surface, there were some concerning numbers:

–the number of subscribers and donations had leveled off.
–The bounce rate was very high, meaning most viewers left after viewing the home page.
–average engaged time spent on site was low–-a major concern for a literary magazine featuring long thoughtful essays, and poetry.

Important fact: the site does not show ads and relies on donations.

My research combined input from myself and 3 other designers using a rubric of questions and spaces for their commentary.

    uniE621 Coyote's Wild Home
Picture book illustration for authors Lily Kingsolver and Barbara Kingsolver: front and back cover art. The story: A story of migrations, both human and animal, into unfamiliar landscapes. On this summer day four individuals: an old man and his granddaughter, and a coyote and her young nephew, wander through the same woods. They never meet eye-to-eye, yet each senses the presence of the other. The coyote pup discovers his new wild home as the two humans unearth fresh truths about themselves.
uniE621 NEPAccess.org: Improving Public Policy Decisions with Data Science
A team of scientists and developers at the University of Arizona aimed to revolutionize environmental policy decisions by creating a specialized search engine for 50 years of environmental planning documents, a large, extremely complex technical dataset. Guided by UX research, the team successfully developed a specialized search platform tailored for a addressing the unique needs of a range of user types from citizens to government agents, who all found existing search options inadequate.
