Job Introduction
Primarily to provide high-quality field Picture gathering and editing, to contribute to, or create editorially unique and high impact multiplatform content. To feed material back to base and where necessary to carry out straightforward journalistic and production duties.

The individual is responsible for getting to locations with appropriate equipment, often on their own, and driving is a significant and regular part of the duties. You will need an understanding of how the audience engages with video on different platforms, to draw in viewers on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. Part of the job will involve building videos around the published templates and posting them on BBC and social platforms.
 
Role Responsibility

  1. To gather material for either live transmission or recording, providing a representative visual and audio account of events: this will include camerawork, sound work and lighting in the field and, on occasions where required, at base.
  2. To work to a brief, delivering material, often unsupervised, contributing ideas as appropriate, being aware of the different styles and techniques of the programmes, and of new media and digital platforms.
  3. Occasionally to conduct interviews under editorial guidance.
  4. To select, prepare and edit material for transmission on all platforms. To complete such work to meet strict transmission or other editorial deadlines.
  5. To “feed” material in situations where a Facilities engineer is not required, using a range of systems from permanent circuits to portable and vehicle based equipment. This includes the full range of live camerawork, sound work and rigging.
  6. Occasionally to research stories, checking factual details; undertaking background research as required and obtaining further information from all sources.
  7. At all times maintaining professional journalistic and technical standards.
  8. To set up on site facilities to meet programme needs; to liaise effectively and establish good relations with all contacts both outside and inside the BBC. This includes attendance at pre-programme conferences and planning meetings as required.
  9. To operate within the BBC’s Safety and Editorial guidelines.
  10. To contribute to the development of operational procedures and to maximise the use of existing and new technology.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Post holders will have relevant training or experience as a journalist in Print or Broadcasting, or as a technician practising a range of location craft skills (e.g. camera work, lighting, editing, location facilities) in a broadcast environment to be able to gather material for either live transmission or recording, providing a representative visual and audio account of events. They will be able to demonstrate a strong interest in, and proven commitment, to News.
  • Must have the ability to acquire the full range of technical skills to operate technical equipment on location and at base after suitable training; and demonstrate a well-developed sense of visual awareness.
  • Need to demonstrate editorial awareness and judgement, combined with a thorough understanding of the editorial aims and policies of BBC News. This includes good research skills (or the ability to acquire them), good communication skills (both written and conversational) with the potential to originate and develop programme stories.
  • Must have the ability to take responsibility for any brief that might be assigned by a programme, newsroom or newsgathering editor, showing ability to work well in a team and with journalistic colleagues across BBC outlets. This includes the ability to work under pressure.
  • Willingness to travel in Kyrgyzstan and abroad, often at short notice. May be asked to work in area of hardship/public unrest.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of relevant Health and Safety guidelines and Legislation
