Part-Time Graphic Designer-Media Communications Specialist

Hourly Rate: $20.18

The Part-Time Graphic Designer-Media Communications Specialist is responsible for assisting in the development of market strategies and for producing materials designed to promote recruitment, retention, attendance at Parkland College community venues, and the Parkland College brand.

The Part-Time Graphic Designer-Media Communications Specialist is a part-time, 19-hour/week appointment on a schedule established by the Associate Director of Marketing and Public Relations. The position involves completing assigned projects within deadline, handling multiple tasks simultaneously, and the possibility of being exposed to confidential information. The Part-time Graphic Designer-Media Communications Specialist must be able to think strategically, communicate clearly, and work diplomatically with a variety of clients, as well as have the ability to prioritize tasks, acquire and develop software skills, and stay current with trends in design, marketing, and media.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Collaborate with clients and the marketing team to develop marketing strategies incorporating a mix of traditional and new media while portraying the image of the college consistently, accurately, and professionally.
  • Advise both clients and the Director of Marketing of appropriate strategies; develop coordinating materials for print and digital media, including social media posts and imagery, web/mobile display advertising, blog administration, and internal and external web content.
  • Maintain the integrity of the Parkland College brand in digital and printed publications including proper usage of the college logo, proper placement of postal indicia, and inclusion of ADA/EEO compliance and other regulatory statements.
  • Produce materials for print and digital media suitable for delivery to media outlets or to clients for in-house publication with professional typography, image/video editing, and layout.
  • Develop projects using Adobe Creative Suite design tools, including but not limited to direct mail, print, web, and mobile advertising.
  • Create and transmit digital files to clients and vendors; coordinate project elements with clients, printers, and media vendors; schedule, art direct, and provide post-production for photo and video shoots; and create original artwork as needed.
  • Create and update web content on the Parkland College website and portal.
  • Communicate with vendors about supplies.
  • Assist with the training and supervision of student workers or interns.
  • Facilitate production of printed matter in the campus print shop.
  • Review and recommend equipment and supply purchases.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two (2) year degree in Graphic Design or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Knowledge of typography, page layout, and the print production process.
  • Functional knowledge of best practices for content management, system design, and web structures and digital advertising as well as how to utilize existing and emerging social media outlets.
  • Ability to administer content management system to upload and maintain content for clients on the web site.
  • Verbal abilities sufficient to write and proofread copy, communicate with coworkers and clients, and represent the college marketing department to other areas of the college.
  • Mathematical abilities sufficient to operate design software and prepare cost estimates.
  • Design skills and proficiency in current graphic design software (InDesign or equivalent, Illustrator, Photoshop); video editing and motion graphics software (Premier Pro, After Effects); and hardware.
  • Organizational abilities sufficient to manage paper and computerized photography and client files and to strategize web navigation.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to prioritize, handle a robust workload, and meet tight deadlines.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
