Job Description

The Software Engineer position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a temporary 24-month role within the Research Application Development (RAD) group. This group focuses on developing software solutions for advanced manufacturing, including user interfaces, databases, applications, and IoT solutions. The selected candidate will join the data analytics team at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) to work on building a web-based platform for accessing a large manufacturing science research database.

Key responsibilities include developing dashboard functionalities, web portal features, data management strategies, secure APIs, user interfaces, and data visualization tools. Collaboration with team members on various tasks, support of R&D projects, and general research and development support within the MDF are also part of the role.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in computer science, computer engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrable knowledge in Python programming and proficiency in other programming languages
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Grafana platform
  • Experience in web development (front-end, back-end, full-stack)
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status for technology access

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of web development with Django framework
  • Experience with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, HTMX, and related web technologies
  • Experience with cybersecurity coding principles and best practices

Additional Information

This is a full-time assignment for a duration of two years, with the potential for conversion to a regular staff employee based on performance and funding availability.
