Job Description

The New York Public Radio (NYPR) is seeking a highly motivated Assistant Producer for New Sounds (part-time). The assistant will work with the programming team to produce and maintain live broadcast events and on-air content, including various features, interviews, long-form programs, and specials. A strong interest in unusual music is essential. This role requires a results-driven approach, collaboration with colleagues and partners, and will involve working 24 hours per week. The Assistant Producer reports to the Managing Editor & Host of New Sounds.

Requirements

  • Passion and interest in unusual music, with a desire to learn about venues throughout New York.
  • Facility with audio editing.
  • Familiarity with radio broadcast systems, including music scheduling and automation preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and concepts as necessary.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage several concurrent projects.
  • Ability to work effectively with New Sounds staff, colleagues across NYPR, industry representatives, and cultural partners.
  • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with the capacity to build and maintain relationships across diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Suggest new artists for New Sounds/Soundcheck from various sources.
  • Create error-free descriptive entries in the music database for new artists.
  • Propose programming ideas for New Sounds episodes.
  • Fact-check and quality check each New Sounds episode, preparing audio for all destinations.
  • Edit outdated references for rebroadcasts and communicate changes to the host/producer.
  • Write and publish all copy about New Sounds and Soundcheck episodes.
  • Proofread and edit digital content (e.g., blog posts, articles) before publication.
  • Assist the host in booking guests for Soundcheck/New Sounds and suggest Gig Alerts.
  • Assist at New Sounds Live events, providing promotional language for all platforms.
  • Provide one show to Hawaii Public Radio per week, including audio and cue sheet.
  • Maintain social media feeds for New Sounds and Soundcheck, including writing copy and creating assets.
  • Create and promote Spotify playlists regularly.
  • Create accompanying copy for performance and other videos for Soundcheck sessions.
  • Coordinate with artists for In-Studio recordings for social media.

Additional Role Information

This is a part-time non-exempt role with an hourly rate of $37.6328 per hour. The position operates in a hybrid capacity with the ability to work from home, but the expectation is to work from the Soho headquarters. It is covered under a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.
