Freelance developer for ongoing app support

App Developer is needed in United Kingdom.

We are seeking a freelance developer to take over the ongoing management, administration, and maintenance of our heritage tourism app. The app, created in 2019 and currently hosted by a third-party agency, uses geo-referenced historic photos and maps to guide users through heritage trails and explore locations via a Google Maps base map. The agency will continue to host the app but no longer offers support or development, so we require a developer who can manage both Android and iOS versions, using their own developer accounts on Apple and Google Play. This contract would be on an annual basis and you will be working with East Riding Archives, a heritage service for a UK local authority with experience working across multiple regional partners and recognized by leading digital and tourism awards.

Our heritage tourism app uses geo-referenced historic photos and maps to show users how locations used to look in the past, through trails and self-directed exploration of a Google Maps base map. Accolades include multiple shortlisting at the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards and Digital Culture Awards from Arts Council England. We work with over 20 different partners on the production of heritage trails.

Below is a technical overview of anticipated requirements (please note this is currently for research purposes and does not constitute a formalised specification at this stage):
Essential skills
• Experience maintaining or migrating legacy Titanium SDK / Appcelerator applications
• Ability to build and update apps for both iOS and Android, ensuring compatibility with current App Store and Play Store requirements
• Understanding of app store submission processes, certificates, signing keys, and versioning
Desirable skills
• Awareness of accessibility standards for public sector apps
• Familiarity with Google Maps SDK, GPS integration, camera access, offline content caching, and audio playback within mobile applications
Deliverables
• Establish a working build environment for the existing app
• Implement updates or bug fixes required for current app store compliance
• Prepare and submit the app to both stores under the developer’s own accounts
• Ensure continued functionality of existing features (maps, GPS, offline data, audio, camera)
Ongoing support
• Maintenance of app store listings and future compatibility updates
• Minor bug fixes and security updates
• Potential consultation on redevelopment in a modern framework
