Job Description

The Collaborative Pianist provides accompaniment for choral ensembles, choral conducting courses, and one-on-one coaching for instrumental soloists or provides coaching/accompanying for voice and the Opera Area.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide accompaniment for choral ensembles, choral conducting courses, and one-on-one coaching for instrumental soloists or provide coaching/accompanying for voice and the Opera Area.
• Practice to prepare all repertoire for assigned accompanying and coaching.

Requirements

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will possess a broad and deep knowledge of choral and opera literature, a wide range of vocal and instrumental solo repertoire, and expertise in vocal and opera coaching techniques, along with effective rehearsal strategies. Familiarity with foreign languages commonly used in vocal literature is preferred.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community and follow university policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Education and Experience

• Special training or coursework facilitating composing and improvising music and experience leading to familiarity with accompanying choral groups and soloists (instrumental and vocal) or interpretive dances required.

Preferred:

• Earned Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Collaborative Piano Performance, Piano Performance, or closely related field.
• Demonstrated successful experience as a collaborative pianist and vocal coach in a university and/or professional setting.
• Comfort in all styles of classical art music and fluency to play difficult contemporary scores.
• Comprehensive knowledge of classical vocal repertoire including opera, oratorio, and art song or instrumental repertoire.
• Mastery of Italian, German, French, and English language lyric diction.
• Knowledge of opera literature.

Physical Summary

• Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting, with minimal walking and standing. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by education, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and hiring department’s fiscal resources. The hiring rate for this position is $2,313 per month, with a salary range of $2,313 - $3,369 per month.

0.50 time-base, part-time. This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted.
