Job Description

The Collaborative Pianist provides accompaniment for choral ensembles, choral conducting courses, and one-on-one coaching for instrumental soloists or provides coaching/accompanying for voice and Opera Area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide accompaniment for choral ensembles, choral conducting courses, and one-on-one coaching for instrumental soloists or for voice and Opera Area.
  • Practice to prepare all repertoire for assigned accompanying and coaching.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidate will possess a broad and deep knowledge of choral and opera literature, as well as a wide range of vocal and instrumental solo repertoire. They will demonstrate expertise in vocal and opera coaching techniques, along with effective rehearsal strategies that support both individual and ensemble performance. Preferred qualifications include familiarity with foreign languages commonly used in vocal literature.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.

Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university’s commitment to a “vision of excellence.”

Education and Experience

  • Special training or coursework that would facilitate composing and improvising music and/or coaching and accompanying, along with experience leading to familiarity with accompanying choral groups and soloists required.
  • Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Collaborative Piano Performance, Piano Performance, or closely related field preferred.
  • Successful experience as a collaborative pianist and vocal coach in a university and/or professional setting preferred.
  • Comfort in all styles of classical art music, ability to play difficult contemporary scores, and read 4-part open score accurately preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of classical vocal repertoire including opera, oratorio, and art song or knowledge of instrumental repertoire preferred.
  • Mastery of Italian, German, French, and English language lyric diction preferred.
  • Knowledge of opera literature preferred.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring rate for this position is $2,313 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,313 – $3,369 per month.

Time Base

0.50 time-base, part-time.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
