Job Description

John August Design is a small, fast-moving design studio based in Montana, delivering high-quality websites, brand identities, and marketing campaigns for businesses across industries. We’re looking to bring on a versatile freelance contractor who can support ongoing web design and digital marketing projects on an as-needed basis. This is a contract role — not an employee position — ideal for someone who thrives on diverse creative work, can self-manage, and is comfortable collaborating with a design-forward studio owner.

Role Overview

You’ll assist with a wide range of digital projects, including web design, design production, landing pages, light copywriting, SEO updates, and digital marketing support. The ideal fit is someone who can think like both a designer and a marketer, switch between tasks quickly, and keep projects moving without needing heavy oversight. You will work closely with the studio owner (John) and occasionally communicate with clients, depending on project scope.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Web Design & Development

• Build and refine websites (primarily Squarespace + WordPress/Elementor)
• Implement provided designs, layouts, and brand guidelines
• Handle site updates, optimizations, and troubleshooting
• Create landing pages, pop-ups, and interactive components
• Upload and format blog posts, content blocks, galleries, etc.

Brand & Creative Work

• Assist with creating simple graphics, layouts, icons, and marketing visuals
• Resize, optimize, and organize digital assets
• Maintain consistency across all designs and brand materials

Marketing Support

• Assist with email campaigns (Mailchimp, Squarespace Email, Klaviyo, etc.)
• Handle on-page SEO updates and content formatting
• Support Meta/Google ad creative production (images, text variations)
• Help organize brand assets, workflows, and documentation

Project Coordination

• Update ClickUp or project task boards
• Help keep timelines and deliverables on track
• Provide status updates and communicate any blockers
• Strong experience with Squarespace and WordPress (Elementor)
• Comfort with basic HTML/CSS tweaks
• Working knowledge of digital marketing tools (email, ads, SEO, analytics)
• Graphic design proficiency (Figma, Canva, or Adobe)
• Solid copywriting instincts for landing pages and email content
• Ability to juggle multiple small projects and communicate clearly
• Reliable, organized, and proactive

Bonus Points For:

• Familiarity with brand identity systems
• Experience with CRM or automation tools
• Ability to edit short-form social/video content
• Knowledge of Montana small businesses (not required)

Contract Details

• Part-time, contract-based (hours vary; typically 5–20 per week depending on workload)
• Remote
• Flexible schedule; work is task-based, not shift-based
• Pay rate dependent on experience (typically $25–$45/hr or project-based)
• Must be able to invoice monthly for work completed
• This is a 1099 contractor role. You are responsible for your own taxes.
