JOB DESCRIPTION

CBS News Detroit is seeking an innovative visual storyteller to serve as a photojournalist for CBS Detroit newscasts, CBS News Streaming, and local programming. The ideal candidate will possess an expert understanding of NPPA & cinematic style principles, along with a keen eye for detail and a demonstrated body of work experience. Responsibilities include the professional operation of broadcast cameras, drones, digital microwave and satellite ENG vehicles, non-linear editing systems, and supporting multi-platform social media strategies.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Demonstrate knowledge and experience with ENG news coverage, including Sony HD cameras, Edius non-linear editing, ENG lighting, microwave and satellite transmissions, drones & GoPro cameras.
• Edit news stories under urgent deadlines while maintaining editorial integrity.
• Safely operate company vehicles, including microwave-equipped vans and trucks, under various weather conditions.
• Bring creativity and imagination to broadcast storytelling.
• Meet all show production deadlines.
• Ensure news equipment is protected from theft and damage.
• Contribute to the editorial process with story ideas and attention to production strategy.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to extend scheduled shifts on short notice due to the unpredictable nature of news assignments.
• Physical capability to carry and manipulate at least 75lbs of gear, and set up and break down broadcast production equipment, often alone and under tight deadlines.
• Ability to safely drive company vehicles under various conditions, including potentially long drives to and from assignments.
• Flexibility regarding assigned work schedules, including weekends, overnights, and mornings.
• Effective communication regarding editorial content and logistical details related to production deadlines.
• Ability to gather critical information at various news locations.
• Must join the IBEW union if not already a member.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION

• Five years of experience as a photographer and editor, preferably in a top 25 market.
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a similar field preferred, or equivalent experience.
• Familiarity with the Detroit area is desirable.
• Strong background in non-linear editing, particularly with Edius.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license.
• Experience with Jib & Technical Operations Center is a plus.
• Drone ENG experience with FAA Part 107 certification is a plus.
• Strong computer and troubleshooting skills.
