JOB DESCRIPTION

CBS News Chicago is in search of its next innovative visual storyteller. The ideal candidate will possess an expert understanding of NPPA & cinematic style principles, a keen eye and ear for detail, and a demonstrated body of work experience. This role involves covering news events and stories as a per diem Photographer Technician for CBS Chicago newscasts, streaming platforms, and local programming. Responsibilities will also include supporting multi-platform social media strategies and cbschicago.com, with field duties that encompass the professional operation of broadcast cameras, drones, digital microwave and satellite ENG vehicles, non-linear editing systems, and IP based broadcast applications.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience with ENG news coverage, including the use of Sony HD cameras, Edius non-linear editing, ENG lighting, microwave and satellite transmissions, drones, and GoPro style cameras.
  • Edit news stories under urgent deadlines while maintaining editorial integrity.
  • Safely operate company vehicles, including microwave-equipped vans and trucks, in various weather conditions.
  • Bring creativity and imagination to broadcast storytelling.
  • Ensure that all daily show production deadlines are met.
  • Take care to protect news equipment from theft and damage.
  • Consistently contribute to the editorial process in a team environment with story ideas and attention to production strategy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to extend scheduled shifts on short notice due to the unpredictable nature of news assignments.
  • Physical ability to carry and manipulate at least 75lbs of gear and set up/break down broadcast production equipment, usually alone, under tight deadlines.
  • Capable of safely driving company vehicles under various conditions and on potentially long drives to assignments.
  • Flexibility with assigned work schedule, including weekends, late nights, and/or overnights.
  • Effective communication regarding editorial content and logistical information related to production deadlines.
  • Must join the IBEW 1220 union if not currently a member.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION

  • Five years of experience as a photographer and editor, preferably in a top 25 market.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago area is desirable.
  • Strong background in non-linear editing, including Edius.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license.
  • Experience with Jib & Technical Operations Center is a plus.
  • Drone ENG experience with FAA Part 107 certification is a plus.
  • Strong computer and troubleshooting skills.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hourly Pay Range: $64.77 - $68.47 per hour. The hiring range applies to various geographies, and starting pay depends on various job-related factors, including geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
