Job Description
Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind is seeking a dedicated On Call Sound/Light Technician to support events and activities at our center. This role is vital in enhancing the sensory experience for participants and ensuring smooth technical operations during various programs in California. The Sound/Light Technician will support the artistic vision of the theater by designing, operating, and maintaining sound and lighting elements for productions, rehearsals, rentals, and special events in a black box theater environment while providing technical expertise and ensuring equipment functionality.
Job Responsibilities
Technical Support & Safety
- Assist with load-ins, strikes, and general stage preparation.
- Troubleshoot audio/lighting issues before and during events.
- Uphold safety protocols for all equipment, wiring, and rigging.
- Train or guide volunteers, students, or staff on basic equipment operation as needed.
Lighting
- Install, focus, patch, and strike lighting equipment for productions and events.
- Operate lighting consoles from the designated technical control booth during rehearsals and performances.
- Interpret lighting plots and collaborate with designers and directors.
- Maintain lighting instruments, boards, dimmers, and rigging hardware.
- Ensure proper color gels, gobos, and LED programming.
Sound
- Set up, mix, and operate sound reinforcement systems for live performances.
- Operate audio systems from the control booth, including mixers, playback devices, microphones, and monitors.
- Assist with recording needs.
- Program and playback show cues using theatrical sound software/hardware.
Projection & Media
- Set up, operate, and maintain projectors and basic projection systems.
- Coordinate projection cues with lighting and sound elements.
- Assist with troubleshooting of projection systems.
Collaboration & Administration
- Attend design and production meetings, and technical rehearsals.
- Maintain equipment inventory and recommend repairs or purchases.
- Assist with theater rentals and support flexible seating configurations.
Complete other duties as requested by the supervisor or Director.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater, Audio Production, or related field preferred.
- Previous experience in technical theater, live event lighting, or sound operation required.
- Strong knowledge of lighting and audio control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and cue sheets.
- Ability to lift and move equipment (70+ lbs) and safely work at heights.
- Flexible availability for evenings, weekends, and production schedules.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to ask for help when needed.
- Demonstrate compassion and patience to a diverse consumer population.
- Ability to work in a team-centered environment and accept feedback.
- Maintain a valid CA driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to complete and pass all pre-employment screening requirements.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
This position is primarily housed in an open-air conditioned classroom, with outside activities subject to weather elements. Occasional driving of consumers is required. The role includes moderate physical activity, and duties may involve assisting consumers with mobility devices and lifting weights varying from 10-100 pounds. There may be exposure to bodily fluids and a commitment to practicing stringent Universal Health Precautions is essential.

Pay: $45.00 - $50.00 per hour
