Job Description
The Luʻau Lighting Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining the lighting system during live performances, ensuring accurate execution of lighting cues and consistent visual quality throughout the show. This role focuses on show reliability, timing, and professional execution in an outdoor luʻau setting. The Lighting Technician operates pre-programmed lighting shows using grandMA lighting consoles, executes cues according to the run-of-show, monitors system performance, and troubleshoots issues in real time. This is not a programming or design role.
Requirements
CORE LIGHTING RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate grandMA lighting consoles to execute pre-programmed cues during live performances
- Run lighting cues accurately according to the show sequence and production timing
- Monitor lighting output throughout the event and make approved adjustments as needed
- Support performance lighting, ambient lighting, and transitions during the lūʻau
- Conduct pre-show lighting checks to confirm system readiness
- Troubleshoot lighting or control issues quickly during live performances
- Coordinate with stage management, audio, and production leadership on timing and cues
- Support consistent lighting quality across repeated shows
- Assist with lighting equipment setup, focus, strike, and secure storage post-event
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe lighting work area
- Follow all production, electrical, safety, and venue protocols
- All other tasks as assigned
LUʻAU-SPECIFIC & OUTDOOR LIGHTING EXPECTATIONS:
- Experience operating lighting systems in outdoor event environments, including wind, humidity, and open-air conditions
- Ability to maintain show consistency across repeated performances
- Awareness of show flow, ceremonial moments, and performance cues
- Calm, focused, and professional presence during live performances
- Respect for cultural presentation and performance pacing
- Collaborative communication with production leadership and fellow technicians
- Represent Hawaiian Council with professionalism and technical reliability
KEY SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience running live shows as a lighting operator or technician required
- Hands-on experience operating grandMA lighting consoles (cue execution only; no programming required)
- Ability to follow established run-of-show and cue documentation
- Strong troubleshooting skills in live production environments
- Ability to stand, lift, climb ladders, and move equipment for extended periods
- Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor
Work Environment
- Outdoor evening event setting in West Oʻahu (Ko Olina)
- Live performance and production environment
- Evening, weekend, and holiday availability required
Salary and Benefits
Pay: $28.00 - $38.00 per hour
Expected hours: 19.0 – 40.0 per week
