Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Audio Engineer to support video production, podcast recording, and studio audio setup on an ad hoc, on call basis. This is an employee role, not an independent contractor position. The Audio Engineer is responsible for capturing high-quality audio in both field and studio settings, advising on best practices and equipment, supporting staff and guests during recordings, and completing post-production audio balancing and cleanup.
Key Responsibilities
Field and On Location Production
- Record professional quality audio for video shoots in various environments.
- Select, place, and operate microphones and audio equipment appropriate for each setting.
- Monitor audio levels in real-time and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Coordinate with producers and project leads to align audio with production goals.
Podcast and Studio Audio Support
- Set up and configure podcast and studio audio systems.
- Prepare recording spaces for optimal sound quality.
- Support recording sessions by assisting hosts, guests, and staff.
- Train participants on proper audio practices.
- Create repeatable workflows for recording sessions.
Technical Expertise and Advisory
- Advise internal teams on audio best practices and equipment needs.
- Recommend appropriate audio equipment based on production requirements.
- Maintain familiarity with current audio technologies and standards.
Post Production Audio
- Balance, clean, and mix audio for video and podcast projects.
- Perform noise reduction and level matching to production-ready standards.
- Deliver organized and clearly labeled audio files compatible with editing workflows.
Professional Conduct
- Interact respectfully and professionally with all participants.
- Maintain discretion, confidentiality, and cultural awareness in sensitive environments.
- Represent the organization with professionalism and strong interpersonal skills.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Professional experience as an Audio Engineer or Sound Recordist.
- Strong working knowledge of audio signal flow and recording environments.
- Ability to independently assess audio needs and implement solutions on site.
- Ability to remain calm and courteous under pressure.
- Comfortable explaining technical concepts to non-technical users.
- Reliable, punctual, and adaptable to changing schedules.
Equipment and Technical Skills
Hardware Experience
- Lavalier microphones, wired and wireless
- Shotgun and boom microphones
- Handheld microphones
- Field recorders and audio interfaces
- Mixers and portable audio consoles
- Headphones and monitoring systems
- Podcast studio equipment and room acoustics
Software Experience or Equivalent
- Adobe Audition
- Pro Tools
- Logic Pro
- Audacity
- DaVinci Resolve audio tools
- Audio plugins for equalization, compression, and noise reduction
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on government, nonprofit, or community-based projects.
- Familiarity with multi-camera video production.
- Experience supporting bilingual or multilingual recordings.
- Bilingual or multilingual proficiency in Vietnamese, Spanish, or Mandarin is a plus.
- Ability to assist with equipment selection and studio setup planning.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to remain stationary or move for extended periods during recordings or events.
- Ability to lift and carry audio equipment weighing up to approximately 30 pounds.
Other Requirements
- Must have a valid CA Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
Location and Schedule
- Based in or able to work in San José, California.
- Ad hoc, on call scheduling with varying hours by project.
- May include occasional evenings or weekends depending on production needs.
