Job Description

Atlassian is seeking a Principal Machine Learning Scientist to join the Central AI team, which is responsible for constructing the foundational infrastructure and capabilities to expedite AI feature development across the company. This organization accelerates AI innovation within all Atlassian products and ensures collaboration among various teams by providing a unified foundation for AI integration.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Machine Learning engineer, your role will involve:

• Driving the development and implementation of advanced machine learning algorithms.
• Training sophisticated models in collaboration with product, engineering, and analytics teams.
• Designing system and model architectures, conducting rigorous experimentation, and performing model evaluations.
• Guiding and mentoring emerging machine learning engineers.
• Ensuring AI’s transformative potential is realized across Atlassian’s offerings.

Qualifications

On the first day, we’ll expect you to have:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of related industry experience in the data science domain.
• Expertise in Python or Java and the ability to write performant production-quality code, along with familiarity in SQL, Spark, and cloud data environments (e.g., AWS, Databricks).
• Experience in building and scaling machine learning models using large datasets in business applications.
• Strong communication skills for explaining data science concepts to diverse audiences.
• Focus on business practicality, balancing output quality with timely deliverables.
• An agile development mindset appreciating constant iteration and improvement.

It’s great, but not required, if you have:

• Experience in consumer or B2C space for SaaS products, or the enterprise/B2B space.
• Experience in developing deep learning-based models and working on LLM-related applications.
• Ability to solve ambiguous and complex problems and navigate uncertain situations.

Compensation

Atlassian offers competitive compensation packages with base pay ranges differentiated by geographic zone. For this role, the U.S. base pay ranges are as follows:

Zone A: USD 232200 - USD 303150

Zone B: USD 209700 - USD 273775

Zone C: USD 193500 - USD 252625
