Job Description

Cold Symmetry is currently hiring for roles on Mortal Shell II, the next chapter in our acclaimed action-RPG franchise. We are in the development phase, refining key narrative and cinematic elements. We are seeking a freelance Motion Designer / After Effects Artist to enhance 2D animatic sequences, supporting the game’s storytelling and atmosphere. This role involves transforming existing animatics into dynamic sequences that effectively communicate tone, emotion, and narrative intent.

As a Motion Designer, you will collaborate with the art and narrative teams to improve the overall edit, animate layered 2D assets, and add thoughtful VFX in After Effects to enhance clarity and mood. The ideal candidate should possess strong editorial instincts and a sense of timing, using motion and VFX to elevate still artwork into a lively presentation.

Requirements

• Strong motion design and 2D animation skills, with professional experience in After Effects.
• Affinity for dark fantasy or broader fantasy/mystical themes, with the ability to reflect this through motion and effects.
• Comfortable working from animatics, storyboards, or rough editorial passes.
• Understanding of how motion, pacing, and VFX support narrative storytelling.
• Keen eye for timing, composition, and visual hierarchy.
• Able to work efficiently on a tight timeline and iterate quickly based on feedback.
• Enjoys collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and incorporating creative direction.

What You’ll Do

• Collaborate with the art and cinematic/narrative teams to refine 2D animatic intro sequences, defining pacing, tone, and visual flow.
• Build upon existing draft animatics and 2D artwork to create dynamic and emotionally impactful sequences.
• Animate layered 2D assets to enhance depth, motion, and visual clarity.
• Apply a thoughtful VFX and motion design pass in After Effects to enhance storytelling elements and transitions.
• Improve overall timing, edit, and visual cohesion for a polished final presentation.
• Deliver clean rendered sequences ready for integration into Unreal Engine projects.
