Job Description

This position is for temporary engagement through our staffing partner, DZConnex. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States for this position. Ability to work hybrid from our Santa Monica, CA studio is required. For nearly 40 years, Naughty Dog has been crafting best-selling, critically acclaimed games that constantly push the boundaries of narrative, gameplay, and technology. Currently, Naughty Dog is busy developing ‘Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet’ and seeks talented individuals to join the team.

As a Cinematic Lighting Artist, you will collaborate with various teams to create visually spectacular and engaging cinematic sequences using proprietary lighting tools. You’ll contribute to the Naughty Dog legacy by developing extraordinary experiences for a wide global audience.

Requirements

What you will do:

  • Develop lighting schemes for characters and environments in collaboration with Directors and the Concept Art team.
  • Collaborate with the Level Lighting team for integration of in-game cinematics with gameplay.
  • Ensure in-game cinematics run within the memory budget without compromising visual quality.
  • Work with outsource vendors and lighting artists on visual looks, tech, training, and workflows.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

What skills you will use:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in Games or Animation/VFX/Film.
  • Experience shipping a AAA game or equivalent.
  • Excellent understanding of direct/indirect light, color theory, exposure, contrast.
  • Strong understanding of shading/materials in relation to lighting.
  • Artistic skills to interpret concept art to recreate mood and atmosphere in a game environment.
  • Expertise in industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya.
  • Proficiency in color grading software including Nuke, Fusion, Resolve.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal direction and under pressure on time-sensitive projects.

Bonus Skills: (Optional)

  • Experience with real-time engines.
  • Experience generating light-maps, pre-lighting, or baked lighting.
  • Experience with scripting.

As part of the application process, candidates will need to provide a portfolio or demo reel of their work and may be asked to complete an art test.

Additional Information

At SIE, base pay ranges are set based on competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location. The estimated base pay range for this role is $57.98—$72.45 USD hourly. In addition, this role is eligible for benefit offerings that include medical, dental, and vision.
