Job Description

Position: Podcast Producer / Editor / Engineer

This is a project contract position for a podcast (5-6 episodes per month) based in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The role involves supporting end-to-end podcast production across leading audio and video platforms, combining research, live recording, engineering, post-production editing, publishing, distribution, and content repurposing for social and short-form platforms. The candidate should be technically strong, creatively driven, and familiar with podcasting and YouTube best practices.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the show’s content direction, scheduling, and overall quality.
  • Handle recording, editing, mixing, mastering, and uploading podcast audio.
  • Monitor audio/video quality, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure broadcast-ready recordings.
  • Perform audio cleanup, leveling, syncing, and enhancements.
  • Edit full-length podcast episodes for audio and video distribution.
  • Upload episodes to platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube with correct metadata and show notes.
  • Create RSS feeds, SEO descriptions, and episode transcriptions.
  • Ensure episodes meet quality standards and are released on time.
  • Manage advertiser partnerships and associated tasks.
  • Maintain the podcast’s website with updates and episode pages.
  • Create short-form clips and highlights from full episodes.
  • Manage and optimize the YouTube channel.
  • Produce vertical shorts optimized for various platforms.
  • Maintain efficient file management, naming conventions, and transfer processes.
  • Assist with logistics, note-taking, file management, and general support.

Possible Additional Responsibilities:

  • Create show rundowns.
  • Conduct research for episodes, topics, and guests if necessary.
  • Assist the social media director in promoting episodes and engaging with listeners.
  • Design engaging thumbnails for podcast platforms.
  • Collaborate with fellow producers and hosts.
  • Possible on-microphone participation on occasion.

Tools & Software Proficiencies:

  • Audacity (Adobe Creative Suite), GarageBand, and/or other audio & video software.
  • Riverside and Zoom recording platforms.
  • Google Workspace for collaboration.
  • Descript for transcribing, ID3 Editor for tag editing.
  • Familiarity with AI content creation tools such as SubMagic and Opus is a bonus.

Platforms:

  • Major podcast distribution platforms (e.g., Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube).
  • Publishing platforms (e.g., Spreaker, Buzzsprout).
  • Social Media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, TikTok).

Key Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in podcast production, audio engineering, or technical directing.
  • Experience working on a podcast or talk-show format is preferred.
  • Strong video and audio post-production skills.
  • Deep understanding of podcasting and YouTube best practices.
  • Strong technical problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent file organization and asset management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Collaboration and communication skills for production meetings.
  • Highly organized with a fast-paced working environment.

Nice to Have:

  • Passion for pop culture and creative content sourcing.
  • Graphic creation and thumbnail design skills.
  • Experience in high-volume or fast-paced podcast production.
  • Familiarity with multicam recording and sync workflows.
  • Knowledge of audience metrics and content optimization.
  • Experience in live recording events.
  • Understanding of social media trends and short-form storytelling.
  • Reliable editorial and legal judgement.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Discretion and professionalism when working with high-profile talent.
  • Ability to creatively package audio content with complementary materials.
  • A positive outlook and sense of humor.

Additional Information

Salary Range: $40,400 to $50,500 (yearly rate) subject to experience.

Location: Hybrid remote in Southfield, MI 48076; typically on-site for one half-day per week at an Oakland County recording studio.

Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Contract Details: Contract workers handle their own taxes (via 1099 forms) and maintain flexible hours if duties are completed. Initial 90-day evaluation period with potential for ongoing engagement and increased responsibilities with wage increases.
