Job Description

We are seeking a freelance Java Stack Developer for a public sector program in Zwolle. This role involves significant hands-on work in an agile environment, contributing to a crucial modernization program that impacts a major governmental organization undergoing digital transformation. You will build and improve an essential system that interconnects various environments within a national chain.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Rebuilding an existing system using a standardized Java architecture.
• Developing new functionalities in line with changing regulations.
• Designing and coordinating REST APIs among stakeholders and locations.
• Collaborating with both technical and non-technical teams across diverse locations.
• Participating in peer code reviews and ensuring high engineering standards.

Requirements

Essential:

• Minimum 5 years of experience in backend development, specifically with Java.
• Extensive experience in designing and working with REST APIs.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps tooling.
• Proven ability to translate business requirements into technical design.
• A completed HBO/WO degree in Software Engineering or a similar field.

Desirable:

• Experience with Vue.js (ideally around 3+ years).
• Knowledge of J2EE environments.
• Experience working with diverse stakeholders or in distributed teams.

Additional Information

• Location: Zwolle (Hybrid – at least 2 days on-site)
• Duration: 12 months (extension likely)
• Start: May 2026
• Rate: Up to €80,- per hour
• Hours: 36 hours per week
• Candidates must have a proficiency in Dutch at least at a B2 level.

The position operates on a hybrid model requiring two days a week on-site in Zwolle with occasional travel to other locations for alignment sessions. The working environment is agile, involving multidisciplinary teams with a strong focus on delivery and flexible work hours, subject to team consensus.
