Job Description

The Government of Alberta is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to support digital transformation and data modernization initiatives across multiple ministries. The role involves working within cross-functional Agile teams to design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions, while also supporting analytics and data-driven decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Data Engineering

• Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines (on-prem & cloud: Azure, AWS, GCP)
• Develop and optimize ETL/ELT processes
• Build and manage data lakes and data warehouses
• Create dimensional data models (star/snowflake schema)
• Integrate data from SQL, NoSQL, APIs, and files
• Ensure data quality, validation, and monitoring
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for automated deployments
• Work with tools like Azure Data Factory and SSIS

Data Analytics

• Analyze datasets to identify trends and insights
• Develop dashboards and reports using Power BI and DAX
• Define KPIs, metrics, and reporting structures
• Apply statistical analysis and modeling (Python/R)
• Build predictive and descriptive models
• Present insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders

Collaboration & Delivery

• Work in Agile teams (sprint planning, backlog refinement, delivery)
• Collaborate with product owners, engineers, and business stakeholders
• Support digital transformation and service improvement initiatives

Requirements

• Strong experience in data engineering and pipeline development
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
• Expertise in ETL/ELT processes and data modeling
• Experience with Power BI, DAX, Python, or R
• Strong SQL and data integration experience
• Experience working in Agile environments
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
