Job Description

Wizards of the Coast is seeking a new Contract - Commissioning Art Director for Magic: The Gathering. The role involves working with top fantasy illustrators to create award-worthy Magic cards while fostering connections through play and imagination.

What You’ll Do

• Commission a high volume of artwork by identifying freelance illustrators for each piece, providing continuous art direction, maintaining solid relationships with partners, and giving regular updates to the card content producer on art status.
• Review print-ready files to ensure final card quality.
• Participate in brainstorming sessions on future Magic creative expressions and workflow/process improvements with department leaders.

What You’ll Bring

• 2+ years commercial art experience.
• A portfolio demonstrating strong creative vision with a cinematic lens.
• An understanding of Magic as both a game and a brand.
• Strong communication skills and comfort with giving and receiving feedback.
• High attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Deep knowledge of the current fantasy illustration market/talent and modern print/press techniques and processes, with an interest in discovering diverse, emerging artists.
• Adept in Adobe Photoshop and proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Additional Details

This is a temporary assignment providing services to Wizards through an external staffing agency. Employment will be with Workwell as a W2 employee and not directly with Wizards.

• Employment Type: Contingent Worker
• Location: WA or Fully remote within the U.S.
• Duration: Up to 12 months

Compensation Range, Currency USD

• Starting Pay Range: $53.80/hour
• Pay Range End: $80.67/hour
