Job Description

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) is looking for a creative, energetic digital content manager to join our communications team temporarily to cover a parental leave from mid-September through May 2027. This position offers an opportunity for a digital storyteller to manage our social media presence and implement our social media content strategy to engage diverse audiences across platforms. The digital content manager will report to the director of digital strategy and can work in a hybrid environment based in San Francisco or Sacramento.

Responsibilities

Social Media Management

  • Manage day-to-day activity across PPIC’s social media channels (Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram) while maintaining a consistent, engaging voice.
  • Monitor news, California policy developments, and PPIC’s media mentions for timely content opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the digital team to plan, execute, and evaluate social media campaigns related to key reports, events, and organizational priorities.
  • Maintain and protect PPIC’s nonpartisan brand across multiple social media channels.

Content Creation

  • Develop, create, and edit high-quality graphics and copy from PPIC research for social media engagement.
  • Choose images for published reports that are high-quality, relevant, and consistent with PPIC’s brand.
  • Ability to shoot and edit high-quality short-form social videos that promote PPIC research is preferred.

Performance Tracking and Optimization

  • Monitor key metrics to assess the impact of digital content and campaigns.
  • Track and report metrics for social campaigns associated with major reports and events.
  • Stay current with digital trends, emerging platforms, and monitor peer organizations for ideas and benchmarks.

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • 5 years of experience in digital content, social media, or communications.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Experience with social media analytics platforms (e.g., Sprout Social).
  • Experience developing and editing graphics, charts/maps, and videos.
  • Experience with video production and editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro).
  • Experience with design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel), WordPress, and preferably interactive graphics software (e.g., Tableau, Infogram, DataWrapper).
  • Working experience in a research organization or nonpartisan media organization is a plus.

Abilities

  • Ability to manage social media across multiple platforms.
  • Understanding of brand management, requiring excellent judgement.
  • Demonstrable project management experience.
  • Proficiency in web and social media analytics.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Interest in California policy issues.

Communication

  • Superior listening, written, and oral communication skills, along with strong editing skills.

Collaborative Style

  • Adept at building relationships with diverse groups of colleagues across the institute.

Resourceful

  • Able to take initiative, maintain focus, and work independently to manage multiple deliverables and timelines. A problem-solver who is proactive, motivated, organized with keen attention to detail.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $82,400 - $103,000, dependent on experience. Factors considered for the offer level include the specific role and responsibilities, internal equity, and a candidate’s work experience, education, training, skills, and other expertise.
