Job Description
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a temporary Web Designer/Web Developer to help complete and launch a new office website built in WordPress.
The website’s overall design and structure are largely established. The successful candidate will focus on completing development, implementing remaining content and design updates, troubleshooting issues, and preparing the site for launch.
Key responsibilities include:
- Updating, formatting, and maintaining content within WordPress.
- Using HTML and CSS to make front-end website changes.
- Working with OIRPA staff to address outstanding website needs.
- Ensuring a consistent, user-friendly, and accessible website experience.
- Supporting website development and publishing using Markdown and other markup languages as needed.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- A four-year degree in a related field or equivalent proven experience in web design.
- Strong experience designing and developing websites with WordPress.
- Ability to create, modify, format, and maintain WordPress websites.
- Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
- Comfort working directly within a web development environment.
- Familiarity with digital accessibility guidelines, including W3C standards and WCAG 2.1.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with people with varying levels of technical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with the WordPress Gutenberg block editor, themes, and plugins.
- Experience with Markdown.
- Experience with Git-based version control systems such as GitHub or GitLab.
- Familiarity with Pandoc or other file-conversion tools.
- Experience working in command-line environments.
- Knowledge of APIs.
- Experience with a programming language such as Python or JavaScript.
- Willingness to continuously learn and apply new technologies and methodologies.
