Job Description

SPACES by Hollie Velten is seeking a part-time Kitchen & Bath Designer to support residential renovation projects throughout Northern New Jersey.

This hands-on design and technical role involves evaluating existing conditions, developing kitchen and bath layouts, and producing accurate plans, elevations and detailed design documentation. The designer will actively contribute to space planning and cabinetry solutions alongside the Creative Director; this is not primarily a drafting-only position.

Key responsibilities include:

• Conducting onsite field measurements and existing-condition surveys.
• Creating accurate existing-condition plans from field measurements.
• Developing multiple kitchen and bath space-planning options.
• Addressing circulation, clearances, cabinetry, storage, appliances, plumbing and functionality.
• Designing cabinetry and custom millwork layouts and elevations.
• Producing dimensioned floor plans, elevations and detailed drawing sets.
• Coordinating appliance and plumbing specifications with proposed layouts.
• Reviewing architectural drawings and existing site conditions.
• Incorporating design revisions, site conditions and trade feedback into documentation.
• Participating in site visits, project meetings and design milestones.
• Coordinating with the SPACES team, architects, contractors, millworkers and other trades.

Requirements

• Professional experience designing residential kitchens and bathrooms.
• Strong understanding of residential renovation, construction and documentation.
• Experience with kitchen and bath space planning, cabinetry and custom millwork design.
• Knowledge of plumbing fixtures, appliances, rough-ins, clearances and typical cabinetry dimensions.
• Experience conducting accurate field measurements and documenting existing conditions.
• Ability to produce dimensioned plans, interior elevations and construction/design documentation.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit; experience with drafting, modeling or rendering software.
• Strong attention to dimensions, details and drawing accuracy.
• Ability to communicate design intent to contractors, fabricators and other trades.
• Ability to identify potential issues, contribute design ideas and develop practical solutions independently.
• Experience working in older homes or with unusual and imperfect existing conditions is highly valued.
• At least 2 years of professional interior or architectural design experience preferred.

Schedule and Location

This is a part-time contract position averaging approximately 2 days per week, or 8–15 hours weekly. Scheduling may be flexible around site visits and project milestones, with the potential for additional hours as the project schedule grows.

The role requires regular in-person work at the SPACES studio in Maplewood, New Jersey, and at residential project sites throughout Northern New Jersey. Local candidates only; this is not a remote position.

Compensation

$25.00–$30.00 per hour.

About SPACES

SPACES by Hollie Velten is a Maplewood, New Jersey-based interior design studio specializing in expressive residential interiors and renovations. The studio combines creative interior design with architectural planning, custom millwork and close collaboration with architects, builders and craftspeople.

The designer will work directly with the Founder and Creative Director as an important technical and design partner on kitchen, bath and renovation projects.
