Job Description

Overheard is launching Overheard Sports and is seeking a freelance Content Creator to help build the platform from the ground up. The role will focus on creating daily static and short-form video content covering major sports moments through a relatable, culturally relevant, and entertainment-led lens.

The Content Creator will own content from concept to publication, producing written editorial, memes, graphics, carousels, and low-lift video. The role is suited to someone who understands sports and internet culture, works quickly, and can turn game-day moments, fan behavior, athlete culture, and viral conversations into engaging, shareable content.

Working closely with the Editor, Social Leads, and wider Overheard team, the creator will help shape the brand voice, establish recurring content formats, grow the audience, and maintain consistency across platforms.

  • Help define Overheard Sports’ voice, content pillars, visual identity, and launch strategy.
  • Build a reliable daily posting schedule and develop recurring formats that encourage follows, shares, and saves.
  • Write and publish sharp, witty, on-brand captions, headlines, scripts, and editorial content.
  • Cover major leagues and events, including the NFL, NBA, F1, WNBA, soccer, college sports, and the Olympics.
  • Respond quickly to live and breaking moments, including games, drafts, trades, awards, and major cultural events.
  • Identify audience interests, monitor trends and analytics, and use insights to inform content decisions.
  • Design memes, graphics, carousels, and text-based posts using Canva or similar tools.
  • Shoot, edit, and package short-form video using an iPhone or consumer-grade equipment.
  • Pitch new editorial concepts, video franchises, comedic formats, and seasonal content ideas.
  • Maintain Overheard’s tone, visual style, editorial standards, and accuracy across all content.
  • Collaborate with Creative, Social, and Editorial teams on launches, experiments, and cross-promotion.
  • Manage a fast-moving content pipeline and meet deadlines, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of experience in editorial, social content creation, sports media, publishing, entertainment, or a related creative field.
  • Exceptional writing skills and a strong comedic sensibility, with the ability to write in a sharp, observational, irreverent, and engaging voice.
  • Deep knowledge of sports and sports culture across multiple leagues, including the conversations female fans are having online.
  • Experience creating, launching, or growing social accounts is preferred, with examples of relevant work.
  • Demonstrated ability to ideate and produce social-first content for Instagram and TikTok.
  • Comfort using analytics, comments, trends, and audience signals to guide content strategy.
  • Ability to independently produce complete content assets, including memes, graphics, carousels, and short-form video.
  • Strong understanding of meme culture, internet trends, and how to make sports moments shareable.
  • Highly organized, self-directed, and able to manage multiple content streams while meeting deadlines.
  • Collaborative, communicative, and comfortable pitching ideas and developing new formats.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or other lightweight video-editing tools is a bonus.

Engagement Details

  • Freelance / permalance position, with hours and cadence agreed with the Editor based on content volume and the sports calendar.
  • Remote-friendly; NYC preferred.
