Job Description

The University of Minnesota’s Department of Theatre Arts & Dance is establishing a pool of part-time, temporary musicians to provide live accompaniment for theatre and dance classes, performances, workshops, events, and auditions during the 2026–2027 academic year.

Musicians will accompany activities through improvisation and/or sight-reading. Assignments may take place during the day or evening and at a variety of locations. Piano and percussion are traditional instruments for dance accompaniment, but qualified instrumentalists of any type may be considered.

This posting does not represent a current vacancy. Applicants may be appointed as openings arise from late August through late May, or during summer 2027.

Requirements

Required

• High school diploma.
• Ability to perform a broad range of musical styles with improvisational flexibility.
• For theatre accompaniment, ability to sight-read and perform relatively difficult music.
• Reliability and the ability to meet class, rehearsal, and performance schedules.
• Ability to accompany classes and performances at a variety of locations.

Preferred

• Experience accompanying dance and/or theatre classes and performances in varied musical styles.
• Strong improvisational skills and a broad rhythmic and metric range.
• Ability to read music.
