Job Description

The Ontario Government is seeking a Senior Software Developer – ETL to design, develop, maintain, and enhance database backend solutions and ETL applications supporting data warehouse and business intelligence environments.

The successful candidate will build scalable data pipelines, develop extraction, transformation, and loading processes, integrate and cleanse data, optimize SQL and database performance, and ensure ETL solutions are secure, maintainable, well-tested, documented, and reliable.

  • Design, develop, maintain, and enhance ETL applications and database backend solutions.
  • Build scalable pipelines supporting initial, daily, and incremental data loads.
  • Work with structured and semi-structured files, relational databases, and multidimensional data stores.
  • Develop and maintain ETL scheduling and dependency logic.
  • Perform data integration, cleansing, transformation, analytics, and investigation.
  • Design data models for data marts and enterprise data warehouses.
  • Develop high-quality, scalable, maintainable code using appropriate software development standards and patterns.
  • Construct complex SQL queries and perform database and query performance tuning.
  • Support database management and administration activities.
  • Test, debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Translate business requirements and technical specifications into tested applications.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, subject matter experts, clients, and IT professionals.
  • Elicit, document, validate, and analyze business and technical requirements.
  • Prepare ETL source-to-target mappings, data model diagrams, architecture artifacts, design documents, and other technical documentation.
  • Participate in development, testing, quality assurance, implementation, migration, conversion, and post-implementation activities.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Investigate ETL and data issues, assess impacts, and recommend appropriate solutions.

Requirements

Candidates must demonstrate strong hands-on experience in the following areas:

  • Microsoft Azure: Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Lake, and Power BI.
  • Databricks: Databricks Platform.
  • AWS data services: Amazon Aurora, Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), AWS Glue, OpenSearch, and related AWS technologies.
  • ETL development: Development of extraction, transformation, and load programs supporting initial and daily or incremental loads.
  • Data repositories: Structured and semi-structured files, relational data stores, and multidimensional data stores.
  • ETL orchestration: Development and maintenance of scheduling and dependency logic.
  • Data quality: Data integration, cleansing, transformation, analytics, investigation, and issue identification.
  • Data modelling and warehousing: Data mart and enterprise data warehouse design, modelling principles, and scalable data architecture.
  • Database management: Database administration and strong knowledge of relational and hierarchical database technologies.
  • SQL: Complex query development, performance tuning, and optimization.
  • Source control: Git and source-control strategies and practices.
  • Documentation: ETL source-to-target mappings, data model diagrams, architecture artifacts, detailed design documents, technical documentation, and user documentation.
  • Software development: Programming, application analysis, design, coding, testing, debugging, deployment, troubleshooting, and documentation.
  • Development methodologies: Object-oriented and/or third-generation programming languages, current design patterns, structured development methodologies, and application maintenance practices.
  • Requirements and SDLC: Requirements elicitation, documentation, and validation, with experience across development, testing, quality assurance, delivery, and implementation.
  • Implementation support: Experience with application deployment, conversion, migration, post-implementation support, and technical issue resolution.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, business stakeholders, subject matter experts, and technical teams.
  • Teamwork: Ability to meet deadlines, follow detailed instructions, gather information from diverse stakeholders, and collaborate throughout the SDLC.

Nice-to-have qualifications:

  • Knowledge of AODA and related accessibility regulations and standards.
  • Experience designing Power BI dashboards, KPI visualizations, scheduled reports, and ad-hoc or canned reports.
  • Experience with C#, APIs, functions, application services, PowerShell, and other scripting languages.
  • Knowledge of internet-ready application development, information management, middleware, and gateways.
  • Experience with Rapid Application Development methodologies.
  • Experience reviewing, modifying, encoding, testing, and debugging product installation scripts.
  • Experience conducting design walkthroughs and preparing user and system documentation.

  • Location: 222 Jarvis Street, Toronto, Ontario
  • Work arrangement: 100% onsite, five days per week
  • Hours: 7.25 hours per day, Monday to Friday, within 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding lunch
  • Contract period: January 5, 2027 to October 5, 2027

  • Security requirement: CRJMC eligibility or clearance
