Job Description
John Kind Studios is seeking equipped freelance videographers and cinematographers to support brand stories, interviews, event films, promotional content, documentary stories, and educational media.
The role involves collaborating with JKS producers, creative leads, clients, and crew members to capture high-quality footage aligned with approved briefs and client goals. Assignments may include interviews, events, testimonials, B-roll, and promotional productions.
- Review production briefs and shot lists, identify technical requirements, and arrive prepared.
- Set exposure, focus, white balance, lighting, and audio appropriately.
- Operate cameras, gimbals, and tripods to create intentional, controlled footage.
- Coordinate with venue staff, audio technicians, and other production personnel.
- Follow creative direction while contributing practical production ideas.
- Plan and capture footage for horizontal, vertical, and other delivery formats.
- Protect, organize, back up, and transfer footage within agreed timelines.
- Communicate scheduling changes, technical concerns, and production issues promptly.
- Represent JKS professionally with clients, participants, and collaborators.
Requirements
- Portfolio demonstrating relevant videography or cinematography experience.
- Strong camera operation, composition, lighting, and location-audio skills.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a motorized gimbal and produce smooth, controlled movement.
- Understanding of Log and RAW workflows and efficient footage handoff to editors.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with production teams.
- Reliable preparation, attendance, communication, follow-through, and delivery.
- Ability to reach agreed shoot locations within your stated New England service area.
- Respectful, adaptable approach to working with different organizations, clients, and communities.
- Professional camera system capable of 4K recording at 60 fps, with 10-bit recording or a professional RAW workflow.
- Lens package covering wide, medium, and close-up compositions, including a fast standard zoom and suitable prime lens.
- Compatible motorized gimbal and stable fluid-head video tripod.
- Dedicated audio equipment, including lavalier microphones, boom or shotgun microphone, monitoring headphones, and suitable recording equipment.
- Interview lighting kit with key and fill capability, diffusion, stands, and appropriate securing equipment.
- ND filters, wind protection, spare batteries, compatible media, and a reliable footage backup and transfer system.
- Dependable access to additional equipment required for accepted assignments.
Participation Expectations
- Respond to project inquiries, check-ins, equipment requests, and messages requiring input within one business day during agreed communication windows.
- Keep availability and equipment information current and actively use JKS’s shared workspace and communication channels.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for JKS’s mission and culture, including initiative, respect, cultural awareness, and commitment to client outcomes.
- Handle changing opportunities professionally; assignments depend on client demand, budget, timing, location, and fit.
- Understand that freelance work is intermittent and that joining the network does not guarantee assignments, hours, or recurring income.
- Arrive prepared, raise concerns early, meet agreed deadlines, and honor accepted commitments.
Repeated failure to communicate, complete required check-ins, or fulfill accepted commitments may result in removal from the network and reduced consideration for future assignments.
Compensation and Work Arrangement
Compensation starts at $400 per booked shoot day and may increase based on assignment duration, complexity, responsibilities, and equipment requirements.
Shoot hours, preparation, equipment, footage delivery, travel, and additional charges are agreed in writing before booking. Editing is scoped and compensated separately when required.
Work is performed in person at client locations throughout New England. There is no fixed office reporting location, and ongoing hours or assignment frequency are not guaranteed.
