The role also includes collaborating with system and hardware engineers, supporting software installation and operational monitoring, improving development processes and documentation, and contributing to hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, and system design decisions. Depending on experience, the engineer may serve as a technical or team lead and oversee software development teams.

Development practices may include Agile methodologies, continuous integration, configuration management, containerization, cloud technologies, event-driven and data-driven analytics, database application development, and the design of complex algorithms subject to strict timing, resource, and interface constraints.
